Two XBOs connected through a BT Home Hub 5

    Hi there,

I and my roommate have both recently purchased Xbox Ones. Both are connected wirelessly to a BT Home Hub 5, which has been recently installed.

Both XBOs work absolutely fine on their own - if they are the only Xbox One on the network. NAT status is open, and online games connect and load quickly, we can both receive invitations from our friends, everything works very much as it should.

The problem is that when the second XBO is turned on, problems start happening. Games take forever to load, and there are a variety of game-specific issues and networking problems. Grand Theft Auto Online takes 3-4 times longer to load or complains about
the servers being down (while the other console can connect fine), Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare invitations from one of us to the other either don't show up or don't do anything when we try to accept, and NAT status for both consoles changes to Moderate,
though detailed network statistics shows a different error, ranging from a 'port restricted NAT', a 'cone NAT' (which from research I believe is supposed to mean Open, but status is still showing Moderate), or an 'ip restricted NAT'. Even if both consoles
do a network test at the same time, the detailed NAT status is different on both. As if one console is hogging the ports and they're both getting very confused.

The router in question is a BT Home Hub 5. UPnP is enabled, DMZ is disabled and I have attempted removing the router firewall, disabling UPnP security, giving the consoles a static IP address, forwarding ports (although the only guides to port forwarding
I can find only set up one device, and the router will not allow me to forward ports for both devices as a port can only be forwarded to one device), etc.

I would very much like some more suggestions on the issue, because the game tends to be very picky about us both playing certain games together, especially GTA and CoD:AW. We typically have to have another friend invite both of us, which tends to work far
better, but is obviously not an ideal solution.

Hope somebody can help, it's been by far the most frustrating thing to spend full hours just trying to connect to each other at times.

    Thanks,

    Mindez

    :)

The BT home hub 5's are not fit for purpose.

The UPnP on them is broken. To start with it doesn't have multi-console support. So own more than one xbox and you will have problems.

Secondly it is not compatible with any game made by activision on xbox one, ps3 or ps4.

Games by activision on those consoles use demonware port mapping via UPnP to open the correct ports for COD.

But the homehub 5 totally ignores these UPnP requests meaning you get moderate or strict NATs in any activision game.

The only way to get an open NAT in modern warfare using the home hub 5 is to forward UDP port 3076 to your xbox one.

But as you own 2 xbox ones you will only be able to get an open NAT on one of the consoles because it's impossible to forward the same port to 2 different devices at the same time.

Unfortunately the only way you are going to get round this is to throw the BT home hub 5 in the bin and buy a decent router that has confirmed multi-console support. But if you are with BT infinity this would complicate things as most decent routers don't
have built in VDSL modems which would be needed for infinity.

Thanks a lot for the reply, it's much appreciated.

That was our thinking, and we're definitely open to getting a replacement for the VDSL modem/router. Do you know of any good replacements for the BT Home Hub 5 that are compatible with BT Infinity 80Mb and have UPnP that would allow us to connect multiple
    Xbox Ones?

Draytek as a brand seems to come up quite regularly, but there seem to be a lot of different models.

I actually have one of those BT openreach modems and D-Link DIR868L. That's listed as having multi-console support in the network hardware forums. I get open NATs on both my 360 and xbox one at the same time as well as call of duty on my ps3 and ps4. All
these use port 3074 so looks like multi-console support works.

I don't have 2 xbox ones though so can't confirm 100% it will work but according to the network hardware forums it should do.

Unfortunately I don't know of any combined VDSL Modem/routers though that have multi-console support.

Maybe go on the official BT forums and ask for recommendations then check those recommendations against the xbox.com network hardware forums to see if they have multi-console support.

Two XBOs connected through a BT Home Hub 5

Alternatively you could buy an Openreach modem. I see them listed on amazon but ebay may have them cheaper. Then it would be a lot easier to find a decent router.
