Two Gamertags/Profiles?

I just signed up to XBox Game Pass for PC, downloaded and installed the app and also signed up for a Microsoft account etc.

I created a gamertag which is gave to me with a #number afterwards and everything seemed okay, but then I noticed I also seemed to have a random name/tag attached to the account. When I sign into the Xbox app on Windows and go to the profile page it shows
my desired gamertag at the top but in smaller text underneath the other name (see image #1 below). When I launched a game to play for the first time it showed the random name on the screen.

I tried signing into my microsoft account online which is fine. I went to the Xbox Profile and there is shows the random name (see image #2). If I click the pencil icon to edit the name it takes me to a screen to change my gamertag but it says my current
tag is the manual one, not the random one from the screen before (see image #3), so I can see no way of changing it.

Any ideas?

Sounds like there is a secondary profile where it gives that random generated gamertag. On the microsoft site, delete the auto generated profile and see if that helps.

Also hard powering it off, unplugging the system for 5 minutes, then plugging it back in sometimes fixes that sort of issue.

When I had two names on the account which was some flower gamertag, I had to delete that profile on the microsoft site.

Let me know if there are any other issues.

I think it will allow me to change it again but the first change I made was free and this one incurs a charge. I'm not sure I care that much that I want to pay to change it again to get my original choice.

I think I'll have to live with it.

I couldn't see any second profile on the Microsoft account. I'm using the Xbox PC app not an actual Xbox.

I have managed to change the autogenerated tag to a different one but not my original. Now only the original one is showing on the app, although I suspect the new one will now show in game. Better than nothing I suppose. Will see what happens.

.... just checked and it's using the new one. So the original still hasn't taken priority.

I've just checked and it's the same email and login for both.

I've tried reaching MS support or Xbox support but they always redirect to either here, the wizard, or 'Speak with an XBox Gamer'.
