Twitch, Lets Play, Youtube Gaming Channel = WTH?

Recently Jimmy Kimmel (I don't think he's funny) was laughing at the idea of people watching others play video games. I agree. I think it's ridiculous and I don't see the point.

Sure watching for a few minutes if you are stuck is normal or if you want to see how to get an achievement, but just watching? WTH?

When I'm on my console, I'll look at a game. If someone is broadcasting on Twitch, I'll highlight it, but I won't select it. When you do that you can see gameplay for about 20 or 30 seconds before it stops. 95% of the time, I can tell if it looks interesting
to me or not in that short time.

I can see nothing weird or wrong with people broadcasting because they are actually playing.

Like I said, I think it is pretty strange to watch for a long time. (no offense to people I get along with here) It's like watching people eat food. So for people that love watching people play, what makes you like it?

I do not see the point of watching some play a video game outside of a quick view to see if you like it. But then I do not even really watch tv except on the rare occasion.

I agree with you about Kimmel. And I do not see what there is to make fun of with people watching someone play a game. I would say that would be much more fun and entertaining than watching Kimmel.

 

Oh, and my Eagles prediction is: 5-11. 2-5 entering the bye week.

 

I don't watch tv either so maybe that's part of the reason I don't see the point. I haven't owned a cable box in years.

 

I don't watch TV anymore (for over a decade) and can say the same thing about people watching Jimmy Kimmel (unknown in my country) or TV in general.Stupid.

But it doesn't matter to me,people are free to watch whatever they want.

I'm just surprise by the video gaming broadcast "phenomenon".Didn't know it would be that big.(and still growing).

Maybe same phenomenon as "reality TV",You Tubers,bloggers....

 

I think the appeal of it is seeing the reaction of other people and their thoughts. Just the other week I was watching 'let's play' videos of TWD and The Last Of Us, not all of it, just the major shocking/sad moments in them just because I was curious how
they reacted and now I've been watching a few Until Dawn Let's Play videos because I want to see other people's decisions in the game and see the jump scare reactions and see where they went different to me.

 

Thanks for the input Woodbine. I have to say, not with you specifically, but what is the craze about seeing other peoples reaction? I see it on Youtube all the time. Reaction videos to movie trailers etc. That's even more strange than Lets Play videos.

 

Reaction to movies trailers I've never heard of nor watched myself. Back in the day when I was young living at home I always preferred watching my brother playing games than playing myself, so guess I have always been like that.

But I do find Let's Play videos fun if the people are entertaining. Outside Xbox do let's play videos presented with 3 people and I just find them good to watch.

I can't really explain the reaction thing, like I found season 1 of TWD and TLOU really sad so I guess it's good seeing other people reacting to it the same way as I did or maybe different, some even started crying which choked me up for some reason and
it is interesting for me to hear their thoughts of that particular thing in a game. It's not too dissimilar to watching sports on TV, you've got a person commentating on that too.

I know if I mention Pewdiepie a few people will say they dislike him or can't stand him etc, but I've only just recently started watching his videos and they've had me laughing out loud. I can understand why some people don't see the appeal of let's play
videos though, but I guess we like what we like.

 

I watch video games for a few reasons:

1) To see if the game itself might be worth purchasing.

2) To learn something in-game (e.g., how to do a certain combo in a fighting game).

3) Because the broadcaster is actually an entertaining individual to watch (e.g., Maximilian Dood).

 

Occasionally I may pull up a Youtube video if I get stuck or want ideas for a different way around something. I really don't get the trend of watching the "Let's Play" videos though at all. I'd much rather be playing the game myself.
