    That should give you MUCH better sound quality, since the decoder on your TV was likely just passing a standard stereo signal to the sound system. Now, by going out via Optical to the Sound System, you should get traditional surround.

    I'm definitely crossing my fingers on the adapter, hopefully switching to VGA will be all it takes to get the picture to fit.

    One concern I have about the adapter you highlighted, it mentions the maximum resolution is 1600x1200, whereas the xbox itself outputs 1920x1080. The vertical lines of resolution will be fine (under 1200) but I'm concerned your picture detail will suffer
    since it can only display 1600 across instead of the full 1920.

    If it's not too late to cancel your order, you might consider THIS adapter, as it is about the same price and supports full 1920x1080:

  2. I checked again on the adapter I ordered, and it supports 1080p.

    I'm with you, I'm just concerned about the resolution. 1080p essentially refers to the HORIZONTAL lines, as in the resolution 1920x1080. So, for your converter, 1600x1200, it can support 1080p because the second number, the lines, is above 1080, and it will
    be able to display the progressive 1080 lines. The columns are where we run into the concern. The Xbox One outputs 1920 columns (or pixels across) while this adapter only can display 1600. So, it looks like you'll be in 1080p but still losing information on
    the ends (the 1600 pixels across displayed by the adapter will likely be stretched vertically by your TV to fill the screen.)

    In other words, 1600x1200 is a 4:3 screen ratio, so you'll be getting HD lines, but only enough columns to fill a 4:3 screen size (more like a non-widescreen PC monitor.)

    Jaymo, you'll be happy as I am (oh wait, no, no one can be as happy as I am right now) when you find out that using the VGA adapter actually worked, and is displaying in 1920 x 1080p.

    ::tl;dr solution::

    If you've experienced the same issue as the one mentioned in the OP, try converting your HDMI output into something else your TV supports. For me, converting HDMI to VGA allowed my TV to "Just Scan" for the correct video output, whereas my HDMI-in did not
    support this functionality.

    ::aside::

    After converting to VGA, I lost my audio, since VGA is a video-only format. I had to use the digital audio out port on the Xbox (SPDIF) to actually get sound.

    Thanks again Jaymo for helping me out with this one. You've made me the happiest person on the planet!

  6. Hey again,

    I've been enjoying my games without any screen issues since I added in the VGA converter. Unfortunately, today I realized that there are some drawbacks. Because of the conversion, DVDs and Blurays no longer play, due to HDCP rights management. I'm not seeing
    a work-around other than to use a different device (PS4) to play disc movies.

    Oh, and no, the sound setup goes like this

    Xbox --> TV --> Sound system

    But for my new setup, it will be this:

    TV (video) <-- Xbox --> Sound system (audio)
