turning off external hard drive

when in sleep mode external hard drive does not turn off.my question is, is it safe to unplug the hard drive when xbox one in sleep mode ?does this run the risk of damaging the drive or anything stored on it?

The hard drive I bought works great, easy to set up. Also noticiable faster loading times for game installed on the external.

Unfortunately when my Xbox is turned off it doesnt put the external in sleep mode so have to turn on and off the external manually.

I unplugged my external hard drive when my Xbox was turned off and when I turned it back on and plugged it back in, there were no problems. It could depend on what external hard drive you are using but mine was fine, for now at least, I hope there are no
long term problems

 

Most external drives have an indication/power light when they are in use when the console is in sleep mode as long as this light is off on your external drive then there is no issue with unplugging it, it will cause no damage to the info on the drive....

 

My WD Passport Ultra 1TB seems to draw power from the USB on the Xbox One even when my system is set to power saver mode. It's a slow blink every few seconds (WD site says this is standby/idle mode). It's strange that this is happening when the system is
suppose to be shutdown.

 

In Sleep mode your external HDD is supposed to be on as the Xbox One continually tries to download patches and updates for the hard- and software. If you want it turned off, you need to set it power management to Power Savings and then switch the One off
or press the Xbox button for 5 seconds on the console. that will power down the One completely as well. I have heard people having problems disconnecting while in sleep mode, being unable to resync their HDD later on, so it might not be a good thing to do

I have a WD my book 1 tb that also goes into standby mode but never turns back on when my xbox one turns on. I always have to unplug and replug in the power adapter. I wish there was a way to tell the xbox to cut power to certain usb ports.
