Trying to sign up for live gold free month

ok I see now, tucked away down the far left corner of the web page is a small notification saying I am at En-US, if I click this and change my default location (which I already did on a previous page) I can select my country and the state/province selections
are valid for my locale.

Now when I click to go to the free games it invites me to join up to get the games. I am joined up, I am logged in and I have started my subscription. All very disjointed and confusing so far. I am doing this on my Windows 10 PC. Do I need to do this through
the xbox console in order to be recognised as already being a subscriber and able to download games?

I thought maybe I was set to the wrong region so I went to the change my region page, selected new zealand and got this error: There’s a problem completing your move right now. Please check the Region Change Support Page to make sure it will work for you,
and try again later.

I don't see why it wouldn't work for me - none of the reasons listed seem to apply

Have you gone through the process to sign up to Xbox LIVE? If you choose Free Membership, you will be given the One Free Month of Xbox LIVE Gold. Is this your first time using Xbox LIVE sign up? There is a limit to how many gamertags are eligable for the
one month free.

But like I said above, if you have been through the sign up to Xbox LIVE process and there is no text anywhere stating you have a 1 Month Free Gold Membership, then you may be out of luck.

I believe you get one free month of Xbox Live Gold when you sign up for a Xbox Live profile the first time on a Xbox console.

The free month of Xbox Live gold can be applied from the account creation process if you are making a new account.

If you already have a Microsoft account and don’t have an active Xbox Live Gold paid subscription, you may be able to sign up for an Xbox Live Gold one-month free trial subscription.

Here’s how to sign up:

1. Sign in to the Subscriptions page with your Microsoft account.
2. If you’re eligible for a free trial, you’ll see Gold – 1 Month FREE Trial as a subscription offering. Select Gold – 1 Month FREE Trial, and then select Next.
3. If prompted, add a payment option to your account. If you already have a payment option on file, you can use that.

Important At the end of the first (free) month, your trial subscription automatically turns into a paid Xbox Live Gold subscription that renews monthly by default. The paid Xbox Live Gold subscription will renew to the payment option you
added to your account.

If you don’t want the Xbox Live Gold one-month free trial subscription to renew, you must cancel it. See “How to cancel an Xbox Live Gold trial subscription,” below.
