  1. Trying to remove my son from Microsoft Family, but never removed his consent.

I am trying to remove my son from our Microsoft Family as he wants his own personal account.

Me and my son are the only two in the family, but for some reason, as the Family Organizer I am unable to remove him. He already has his own Microsoft Account that is somehow linked to the family, but he needs my permission for any purchases or other actions when done on it. When I tried to remove him from the family, it said "Family members under statutory age need an adult's consent to join a family group. Only the adult that granted consent for AJ can remove this family member. Ask the family organizer who granted [____] consent to remove [____] from the family group." I am classed the Family Organizer and I have never granted him consent or removed his consent, but I should be able to remove him from the family regardless?

If I removed his consent, would I be able to remove him from the family?

And if was able to remove him from the family, would:

    • He have his own personal account
    or would

    • He still have no consent and no parent to regain the consent for him.

He wants to have his own account, not connected to mine, where he can purchase games and Game Pass on the Microsoft Store/Xbox App (PC) without needing permission from me.

    What should we do?

    Thank you

    :)

Trying to remove my son from Microsoft Family, but never removed his consent.

Hi NICHOLAS my name is Rodrigo. I'm an Independent Advisor and a member of the Microsoft community and I'd love to assist you today.

I am sorry to hear that.

Yes, to remove him from the family, you need to remove the consent first.

    Please, follow these steps:

    Go to family.microsoft.com.

Sign in with your Microsoft account, then, to remove a member, scroll down and select Manage my child's profile info, find their name, select Remove consent for this child's account, and confirm.

Go back to your family's page, and under the member's name, select More options > Remove from family group, and confirm.

I am not sure he understands this, but he already have his own personal account, the parental controls are in place to provide safety for an account that is under age.

That said, he will still have a minor account and will have functions limited, without the benefits of being on a family group.

If he just wants to remove the ask-to-buy function, it's easier to do just that. I highly recommend you go that route.

    You can follow these steps:

Sign in to your Family page with an adult Microsoft account.

    https://account.microsoft.com/family/

Find the child's name and select More options > Spending.

Under the Ask to Buy section, switch Needs organizer approval to buy things to Off.

    I hope this helps.

How do I make my child the adminstrator on his laptop in Microsoft Family?

    Thanks for the reply.

I am using the Microsoft Family Website and I am logged in on my account as the family organzier, the only family organizer our family account has ever had.

Unless they are hidden somewhere very obscure, I cannot find where I can give my son administrator access to his own computer for school. It feels as if there are a layer of controls that are being hidden from me, the parent, for my own family account.

When I try to just remove him from the family account, I get the following message:

You can't remove [Son] from the family group

Family members under statutory age need an adult's consent to join a family group. Only the adult that granted consent for [son] can remove this family member. Ask the family organizer who granted [son] consent to remove [son] from the family group.

This is pretty infuriating and starting to make me really wish I never started the family account in the first place.

Trouble with switching child account back to original (re: proper) Family group ...

I figured it out ... Logging into the Microsoft website using my "gmail" credentials, I navigated to the Family Group.

I had to "remove consent" for my son FIRST, and then I was allowed to remove my son from the "gmail" family group. Logging back into my "hotmail" Family Group, I was able to add him back easy peasy.

To remove consent from a family member’s account:

Visit family.microsoft.com and sign into your Microsoft account.

Scroll down and select Manage my child’s profile info.

Find your family member and select Remove consent for this child’s account.

Then, try to remove and add him again to your family group, please.
