I am an original XBL Memeber when XBL started 11/2002, since then I have had many life changes, some that don't even allow me to access my old email address anymore because it doesn't exist. (@sbcglobal.net) I hear that Microsoft has released a lot of Gamertags
that haven't been logged into for forever. I'm like that's freaking awesome I should be able to get my gamertag back... I go searching under friends to make sure none one has it yet, there I'm told "We could not find that person. Check the gamertag
and try searching again." I'm like awesome it's not being used. I then go to change it to make it mine and it's stating that it has been reserved... the trouble I have with this is that for going on 3-4 years now I keep being told it's being held as a reserved
tag, there is no possible way that every time I go to change it that it just so happens that someone else is going after the same gamertag. Xbox Customer service is the biggest joke of them all, you can call them about anything and all they say is "I am unable
to help you" and if you get that one special rep they'll even hang up if you ask for a supervisor that also cannot help you. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME, all I'm asking for is my gamertag, what's the big deal?

I am having the same exact problem. I went in to upgrade my xboxlive account for more cloud storage and it didn't remember me. It took me through a series of verification steps that I thought were never going to end. When they finally "verified" me, I noticed
I had a totally different gamer tag. Now I have duplicate. I'm waiting in line to speak with support about it...

Since you created a brand-new account I assume that you no longer know the original account's password or you just simply use it and the it's email to sign in. BTW, even if you regain the old account you cannot merge nor transfer anything between the new
and old.

The big deal is the system controls the gamertags and if the system indicates the tag is in use or reserved then it can be chosen. Unfortunately, you are not going to find anyone that will/can override the process.

In theory the only way is to call Support go thru their account verification. Basically your answer as much about the old account as possible. You will need the original info like name, address, email, etc. The bottom line will be if you answer enough
questions correctly they will send you a password-reset link and you can reset the password on the old account. If you don't, then your old account is doomed to float in cyberspace til such a time as MS decides to purge it. And yes I have done this myself
twice....first time I had to do it several times before I regained the account. But the second has failed!
