trying to get in an active accounts gamer tag

hey Microsoft. I’m trying to get in an active accounts gamer tag , so I was wondering if you can maybe deactivate the account or something? It hasn’t been online in years And I’ve been trying to get a gamer tag. just let me know if there’s anyway I can get
it!

Just to clarify,as from August 2016,if a gamertag does not sign in for 5 years then it may be freed up,it's not guaranteed to be freed up.The earliest any unused gamertag could be freed up is Aug 2021.

Another thing to remember is that gamertags are used on other Microsoft services so just because a gamertag may have 0 gamerscore or looks inactive does not mean it is.There is no way to know for sure whether a tag is in use or not.

Thank you for reaching out to the forum. A Gamertag has to be inactive for 5 years, before it will be available for use again.

i have switched the account connected to my gamer tag but the old account is still getting my activity.

No, this did not help me. The gamer tag is still active as I can look it up from another account and even send it a friend request. When I look it up it is definitely my profile and it say original Xbox user. So, the account is still active and my problem
is not the gamer tag, its logging in with the e-mail address associated with the gamer tag.

Hello Ronin,

Some people have a gamer tag but never use it on Xbox. If they are using the Microsoft account attached to the gamer tag then the account is still active. They could be using the MS account to sign in on a laptop or windows phone. There is no direct branch
of Microsoft that handles this. Microsoft when they decide to, will release gamer tags that are not in use again. It could be a very long time though.
