Trying to add 1tb WD HDD to Xbox 360

My son's xbox 500gb HDD died. I'm trying to use a WD My Passport 1TB drive for his storage. Problem is it starts out seeing it as a 1tb drive then when I go through to configure it it wants to take it down to 32gb. What am I doing wrong?

I have the WD Elements 1TB HDD. I wanted the 5TB back then but was like $200 and didn't have the cash back then.

 

USB & Network Media

I have a WD Book Word Device on my home network that connects through Ethernet, I also have a USB 1TB external drive. Is there a way to play media from the USB are network HDD on the XBOX ONE?

One my 360 I use to just go to the media player and my network HDD would show up and I would just pick the movie I wanted to watch.

It would seem that your son's Xbox 360 doesn't have the latest update. Is it connected to Xbox Live?

 

Yes. We did the updates, but I had to configure it first. When I went through the configuration it only sees it as 32gb. How do I get it to recognize that it is 1tb after the update? He has the Halo Reach console and I do not have a xbox hard drive in the
slot. Should I plug in a flash drive so it will do the update and then add the 1tb drive to it?

If my understanding is correct, you currently do not have an internal drive in your console and are trying to open a WD My Passport 1TB external drive for storing the games?

What file format did you use on the WD My Passport when you formatted it on a computer? Are you sure the external drive is functioning properly? I would test it with
WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool on a PC just to be on the safe side that the drive is not causing the issues.

I dont see this as being a format issue, as Xbox 360 would of taken care of the correct format when you first connected it.

I would try to manually update your Xbox using a usb drive, just to make sure 100% that you have the latest and greatest update (even if it shows you do, something may of become corrupt or not installed properly).

Not all external hard drives work/work well with Xbox (The WD My Passport) shouldnt have an issue though as that is what I use (Just the 3TB version)

If you cant get around the problem by doing a re-format with your Xbox, or some other magical solution, id recommend exchanging the External Hard drive. If i remember correctly, WD backs up their drives with a 3 year warranty.

 

That's pretty much what I just did. I unhooked the WD and plugged in a small flash drive. Downloaded all the updates, turned it off and then plugged in the WD. I formated the WD with the xbox and everything seems to be fine now. Thanks for your help!

Updating the console prior to formatting the external drive is the usual way to go.
