Try to stop my Xbox connecting to Xbox locally.

Hey, I've spoken to both my internet provider and Xbox Support about this and no one has managed to help me so far, so I've come here looking for people who might be able to give me some magic solution.

I'm at university and I just brought my Xbox One up with me. My friend that I want to play with happens to be in the same block on my student accommodation which has been causing a lot of problems trying to talk and play with each other.

The problem is that every room in the block connects to the same network (just like two consoles would connecting to the same router within the same house). However, this means the Xbox tries to connect our two Xboxs locally (again, as it would do within
a same house). However, due to the security and restrictions set by our halls of residence internet provider, they cannot allow devices to connect locally or else outside parties could easily tap into the network and steal data.

We can talk and play with each other if someone from a different accommodation hosts a party or game, because this forces the Xbox to connect via the internet (instead of locally) as there is at least one person who is not connected to the same network.
However, this is not helpful when there is no one else to play with and it's just us two that wants to play together.

What I was wondering, is if there's a way to force our Xboxs to connect via the internet instead of locally. If we're able to connect via the internet when someone else is there, why isn't there an option for us to do it when there isn't someone there? Or
any other solutions someone may have would be useful. Also, port-forwarding and any solutions like that will not work as they keep the connection local and we're faced with the same problem as I have already mentioned. And also, I am living on the sixth floor
why he is on the ground floor. If we were closer would could easily connect a cable from my Xbox to his, but unfortunately, this isn't an option either.

    Please help!

    Thanks.

    :)

  2. Connecting to friends locally

I cant seem to, like alot of people, connect to some friends but yet others are not an issue. We have our NAT levels open, tried direct feed into the xbox ( without router or modem), changed IP adresses. Its getting to the point where i just want to cancel
my X box live account, because it is ridiculess that friends from another country we can both connect to them but we who live 5 minutes apart cant play on line..... Does anyone have any answers, I cant believe in this day and age that no one can solve this
    problem

    Hey there Intamasica!

May I ask, are you and your friend trying to play online games through Xbox Live, trying to connect to one or the other? If so, read my description up front.

other.[/quote]Since the two of you sits behind a common NAT, located in the same private IP address realm, the NAT, that both of you reside behind, need to support hairpin (hairpinning), or looback translation.

Could it be that I've misunderstood your question?

    Hi,

I'll get back to you on the Firewall setting, but I'm not trying to connect to Xbox Live. I'm trying to stream a video that's stored on a local NAS. So this firewall and traceroute stuff is irrelevant, but I'll try it out anyway.

Also, I'll try moving the Xbox temporarily closer to the router with a wired connection.

Whatever the problem is seems to be localized to this Xbox, since other devices (such as the smartTV that the Xbox is connected to can stream videos normally)
