Troubleshooting Kinect Voice Commands

I would like to provide more detail below.

I have the Xbox One Day One Edition console with included Kinect. I recently purchased a Xbox One Elite bundle and took my old Kinect and attached it to the new console.

It worked, but then I noticed one nagging command that no longer worked in this new configuration: "Xbox, Watch beINSports". It would take me to VH1 instead of beINSports.

I tried forcing shutdown and disconnecting power for 1 minute from the back of the console. Issue persisted.

I tried recalibrating the sensor. Issue persisted.

I tried Troubleshoot Voice Commands | Xbox One. Issue persisted.

I Tweeted Xbox support. Issue persisted. For the record, here were the Tweets:

I called phone support and worked with them over an hour, re-completing all the above steps and nothing more. Issue persisted.

The phone support rep felt that I had a hardware issue with the Kinect.

I wasn't convinced.

I exchanged my Elite bundle for a new one. Issue persisted.

I decided to put the Kinect on my Day One console, and it worked perfectly, so I knew it wasn't the hardware.

I purchased a new Kinect to go with my new-new Elite console. Issue persisted at first. I thought it strange that a new Kinect and another new console would have the issue, so I thought through it further.

I power-cycled my satellite box. Issue persisted.

I then went to beINSports manually using my controller in the OneGuide. Once there, I said, "Xbox, show guide". It then gave me a list of channels on the right to which I could use a voice command to get there, and beINSports was at the top of the list like
this, "Watch beIN Sport". I realized that the command required a slight pause between beIN and Sport--even though the channel name is beINSports--so I went to NBC first and then invoked the aforementioned command. Resolved.

Given the above experience, I would suggest the following troubleshooting when your Kinect Voice Commands are not working as desired:

• Ensure you are using the right name in your voice command. For games and apps, use the entire name. "Xbox, go to Halo" will not work; instead, "Xbox, go to Halo The Master Chief Collection" would work. Reference the full name in the Games & Apps application
  on your Xbox. If it is a TV channel, go to the station manually using your remote or controller and then state, "Xbox, show guide". Reference the top command in the upper-right corner as it will list your precise voice command to get to that channel in the
  future.
• Ensure you are pausing appropriately in your voice command. Commas are a longer pause, spaces are a shorter pause, and colons are no pause.
  

I would also keep in mind the following points:

• Just because you go through the Xbox support website troubleshooting and the issue persists, it does not indicate necessarily that a hardware issue is present. If you are able, test on another console to verify that the hardware is in fact faulty.
  
• Phone support may require you to re-complete all steps done with Tweet support. If you don't want to do the same steps twice, you may want to jump straight to the phone.
  
• Seek a second opinion online if needed.

Troubleshoot issues with Kinect voice commands


Verify that your Kinect sensor is on

1. Press the Menu button on your controller, select Settings, then select Kinect.
2. Verify that the Kinect on setting is selected. If it isn’t, select Kinect on to turn the sensor on.

Correction. I went to BeINSport manually and then said, "Xbox, select", which showed the Watch command to get to this channel in the upper right corner.
