Trouble with WIRED xbox controller for PC

I have seen others post on this in the past but I have not been able to find a solution for my problem. My wired xbox controller stopped working with my pc all of a sudden. It was like the power just went out. Now, whenever I plug the controller in, the
lights flash in player 1 and player 4 positions and then the lights go out. I am using windows 7 and my machine is custom built. The controller worked for about 5 months before stopping suddenly. I do not have an xbox to test the controller with.

I have tried re-installing the drivers. I have tried restarting. I have tried every usb port on my computer. I have manually updated the drivers through the device manager. A weird thing is that a while ago I tried plugging the controller in and it worked
suddenly, for about 1 hour, and then died again. Since then I have tried all of the things above again with no success.

Has anyone been able to solve this issue? I have been digging through various forums for solutions and I haven't found anything.

^^I'm pretty sure you can plug in your Xbox 360 controller to your PC for The Binding of Isaac if your controller is wired, for Braid as well and other PC games with controller support added.
