Trouble Displaying 120hz

Hi I have an x box one x with a HDMI 2.0 cable. I've connected it to a monitor I recently brought. (Dells2417dg) the monitor is capable of 165hz. However I cant get the x box to display 120hz on this monitor.

I can get it to display both 1080p and 1440p. But it will only display them at 60hz.

Also im unable to allow variable refresh rate as its grayed out.

Hi,

This isn't the right type of monitor for your requirements. There a number of issues here:

Your monitor is only HDMI 1.4

This means that regardless of what cable you use, your monitor's maximum refresh is 60Hz. This is hardware locked and a limitation of your monitor's hardware.

Display Port is the recommended connection for this monitor.

Your monitor has a Display Port version 1.2. This port is the only port the can use your display's full range of features of up to 165Hz Unfortunately, DP is not supported by Xbox One or the new up-coming Series X/S

Variable Refresh is greyed out

Variable refresh (or VRR) is a technology that can only be used on displays that support FreeSync. Unfortunately this monitor does not support FreeSync. It does have a form of VRR, unfortunately it's an NVIDIA technology called G-Sync. Unfortunately, G-Sync
is not supported by Xbox consoles. G-Sync can only be used on PCs with a compatible graphics card.

The thing is if i go into xbox tv sertings i can set to 1080p 120hz. Do i actually get it?

No. your TV display needs to support 120hz to get 120hz from the Xbox,

your TV is limited to 60hz, so that all you'll get, unless you upgrade your TV to one that a true 120hz display.

There's no possible way to get a 60hz display to run at 120hz.

Hi Den. Unfortunately, remote play does not support a 120Hz refresh rate, a supported 120Hz display must be connected with HDMI. If your display does not feature HDMI, it's unlikely to be supported.

No, it simply won't. I've already listed all the steps I've done & installed all the recent software updates. Nothing works for this display.

(Unless you have this certain display and can confirm 1440p@120Hz works for you... I really doubt it because I've tried everything and tried it repeatedly in each new update).

Only displays that support 1440p@120Hz in their EDID will enable 1440p@120Hz. This is not the case for this display.

By my research it cannot display 120hz properly. The manual deliberately avoids talking about it, and the literature keeps talking about how the panel is 120hz. This does not mean the electronics driving the display can keep up.

according to this review it cuts the resolution in half at 120hz.
