Trouble creating Xbox live account

I just started going through the setup for an Xbox Live account. I created a Microsoft account and now when I try to sign in I get a message that tells me the account is associated with a different Xbox live profile, try a different account.

if you create a microsoft account and yo sing in on the page xbox.com when you sing in they create a gamertag if you later try to use that same microsoft account to create a new gamertag on the xbox you cant because you have one already when you sing in
on the xbox live page.

Sorry to hear you're having trouble with your Xbox Live account! To clarify, are you creating a fresh account or are you trying to sign in? If you're making a new account, are you able to create a new Microsoft Account to associate with it?

I've been doing some digging online for you about this error message and this came directly from a MSDN Blog
here. Going out on a limb and say that you want to try out #2 since it seems to be pertinent to you. There are also some
other solutions on the page from others but these are their official solutions.

If you are trying to turn an existing email into a Live ID then chances are that email already *is* a Live ID. If you don't remember the password for this Live ID anymore, you can either reset it (try http://windowslivehelp.com ...
the current password reset page is here) or go create a new one.
If you are trying to create a new Live ID then you should go to https://signup.live.com/signup.aspx instead.
