Saw this on YouTube today and found it very interesting, because what the guy talks about could most definitely affect the online community as a whole, for better or for worse (and I could certainly see Xbox Live being among the 1st to implement something
like this). What's your take on this video and trolling in general? Do you think this guy has some good ideas or do you think he doesn't have a clue as to what he's talking about?

My response (watch video above 1st before reading):

As for me personally, I agree with the guy and think something should be put into place to prevent trolling, which I guess would come as no surprise to some of you, considering many of you see me as a mini-mod of sorts. Still, I do worry about something like
this infringing on people's freedoms online. Then again, much of trolling nowadays has gone too far, IMO (being "swatted" for example).

    :)

I was playing COD Black Ops 2 zombies on Buried yesterday with some randoms. This kid kept on shooting Leroy, the other kid got upset, the other kid kept on doing it so I decided to join in. In the end we all agreed to just mess around in the game. We couldn't
even get jaugernogg open. It's normal to not be able to achieve high rounds when you play with randoms but I guess we can have some fun, but I didn't start it. I only watched 30 seconds of your video because I have a short attention span on Saturday nights
which it is right now for me. One of my friends the other day kept on joining and leaving our party only because there was a girl in it until I put it on invite only.

The problem with the internet (and I'm talking about everything to do with it like online gaming, social website etc.) is that its perceived that your anonymous, that you can say or do anything you want and you'll get away with it, and to some greater or
lesser extent, its true. People can and do/say whatever they want and most of the time they get away with it, either because people don't report it or people just cant be bothered to track the people down.

What the internet as a whole needs is some kind of system whereby every account you own, from your Xbox Live account to your Facebook account etc all have to be linked to one central account, one central account that is yours for life. Then their is no
such thing as anonymous on the internet, people will realise that I cant just spout racial slurs at someone for laughs and giggles, because its easy to be tracked down.

Now I know this may seem a bit drastic, but we have this already in real life. We all have our social security numbers, our driving licence number etc (well, some of us do anyway)

Shaggy, you make an interesting point - a lot of our lives are already somewhat regulated by the government. A lot of that is done to keep us safe (as with having driver's licenses; if you don't drive responsibly, you lose the privilege), which is something
I can definitely understand. However, in a lot of cases, it can also be used against you, since you are easier to track down (as in the case of having your identity stolen if someone obtains your SSN). Having an identity online definitely works in a lot of
the same ways - with an identity (a "real" one) online, I'm absolutely certain that people would be less likely to act in a chaotic fashion in order to have "fun" or otherwise upset the status quo. It would also help protect others from being "attacked" via
real identity theft, death threats, home invasion by police, etc. Having something like this happen though means that there would have to be some form of tracking, which also means big goverment interference, which if everything with the NSA lately has been
any indication, people are wholly against. It really is 1 giant question we all need to figure out - which is why I proposed it with this guy's video in the 1st place.

Shaggy, thank you for your insightful response and connection to the real world. It was a good one.

SSB, please watch the whole thing when you do feel you have the time - it really is an interesting video, and I'm particularly interested in how many of you from across the pond think about something like this, since your governments often do things differently
than here in the U.S. Trolling Along Just For Fun... ;)

I for one like being anonymous. The day they try to tie all my accounts into one, is the day I drop all my accounts. Lol.

    Peace, J.R.

I would never of guessed in a million years that people see the internet and chat forums as an escape from reality and act/treat people differently from the real world.....

  11. Some people need to start seeing the real world as an escape from the Internet. Trolling Along Just For Fun... :p

I'm not entirely sure I agree with the whole multiple accounts into one, but I do think there needs to be something that ties it all together, like a SSN for the Internet, for example, and to a certain extent I think we already have that since a lot of companies
already track which sites we visit and can even go as far as choosing (for us) what advertisements we see. All they would have to do is take it a slight step forward, and make into a public (and likely government-mandated) feature (everybody knows about SSNs),
but private to each individual (I know my SSN, but not yours) that all online companies would be required to follow and/or use.

If they do in fact do this, and D33dles follows through with what he said he'd do, he'd effectively be living off of the grid.

You have the right to wade into the Twittersphere and expose yourself to the world. Or you can... not do that, too. Find a friendlier place. One with rules and a constant moderator presence. Or don't engage at all. Twitter is what it is... little eggs hurling
abuse can be regulated by Twitter... but they're not being, the company likes traffic, so little eggs hurling abuse is a thing on Twitter.

I'm not a fan of this culture of offense in which people are looking to change and regulate other people. "I was offended on Twitter so there should be rules to stop that." Sounds reasonable. What offended you? "Somebody talking about evolution! It was counter
to my beliefs!" Oooookkkkaaayy. Not so reasonable.

Pretty sure in England we apply English common law to the Internet anyway. So you can't go on Facebook and tell someone you're gonna throw a petrol bomb at their house.... without being reported and the police turning up to arrest you. Anonymity only covers
you for so long in some places... and if anonymous people can post to your Facebook wall you need to change your settings.

That SWAT thing is utterly terrifying. 4chan, online bullying... there are issues for sure. A lot to look at. But it's astonishingly easy to avoid it all. IMO Because pockets of the Internet regulate themselves. CoCs, forum rules... mods etc. =)

  13. Trolling Along Just For Fun...

The REAL question is how well an idea like this might work - will it work wonderfully, a little bit, or not at all? I think a lot of people would be okay with it, if they knew for a fact that it would work. However, since there's not really any way of knowing
until we implement it, it's really just guesswork and conjecture. At best, we might be able to list examples, like within the small communities you've mentioned, Argontheos. The downside is that each 1 is different and does things differently, which in turn
means some are better than others. No offense to the mods here, but if it was anything like how this community is run, I certainly wouldn't want it.

The Internet is a small portion of my existence, so I fail to see the "hugeness" of any of this. I agree with Argontheos as well. But seriously if this stuff is a major issue in your life hit the wall socket and go outside where "problems" like this
    gain perspective.

  15. Okay, so a family member is playing a game online and within 10 minutes SWAT enters your house and places everyone under arrest - despite being a "small portion of your existence" something like that can and will have a negative impact on you and your family.
You could even potentially be fatally shot because you tried to defend your family during a home invasion! Things like this shouldn't just be swept under the carpet. There are some truly deranged people out there. With the Internet, their reach grows.
