    Transfer Parent's GamerTag to Child

Has there been any progress on this apparently long-standing issue with the fact that many children start their XBox experience using their parents Microsoft Account, but ultimately need to have their own as they enter their teenage years (without losing
their gaming history). I can't simply hand over my entire Microsoft account (OneDrive files, O365, etc.) to my son, which seems to be the only solution that's offered on the various internet forums. It would seem this ability to transfer a gamertag from
parent to child should've been a basic requirement in the planning for Microsoft Account/Xbox linkage. After all, we can't use parental controls until we're able to do this.

There are questions on this topic from users all the way back to 2012. Surely Microsoft has addressed this by now?

    Transfer Parent's GamerTag to Child

    Hi LauraQ0220,

Thank you for posting on the Microsoft forums.

Every person, adult or child, should have their own Microsoft account (email) when using any Microsoft services, including Xbox Live. When creating a child Microsoft account using their correct age, and then adding it to an Xbox console to create an Xbox
Live profile, the profile will automatically set default privacy restrictions for the age of the child. Then, the parent can add the child to a

    Microsoft Family
and use the many features of parental control to monitor what your child does on Xbox Live, set content restrictions, ask to buy, set time limits, and manage privacy settings.

It's very important to create a
    child Microsoft account
for a child when they want to use Xbox Live so that a child is not using someone else's account besides their own, which can be monitored through Microsoft Family parental controls. Creating a child account for the child when they
first want to use Xbox Live, with restrictions suitable for the age you enter, is how you would prevent this situation from occurring.

Unfortunately, Microsoft cannot transfer Gamertags from one account to another and I don't see that changing because there are many features in place so that a parent is not forced to give their child access to their own Microsoft account.

I transferred $110 to my sons account by mistake, how do I reverse the transaction or return the funds?

you can indeed transfer money from a parental account to a child account, can be done accidentally too, not sure if there is a way to transfer back as child account cannot transfer money.

    Switching accounts

You can't transfer licenses or content from one account to another.

The accounts Parent / Child are separate accounts. The parent account just manages the child account.

The child account will remain a child account until the birth date that was used for that account reaches the age of 18.

How do I switch my microsoft account, which is already associated to a gamertag, to another already active gamertag?

Because the system is designed so that parents account then creates child accounts as necessary and maintains parental control of all children in their family, not so that parent let's child use gamertag associated with their account.

Setting screen time for adults/parent accounts

It is my understanding that the child accounts I have setup for my kids will transfer to adult accounts when they turn 18. This means their achievements and games purchased with the child account will now be a normal adult account.

For example, I have XXX24 setup as the parent account with child accounts YYY24 and YYY25. When YYY24 turns 18 the account is now removed from being a child account attached to XXX24 and is now a standard account keeping the gamertag YYY24 and all achievements
and digital games purchased with that account. Someday when my kid "YYY24" has their own kids it will be a parent account with new child accounts under it.

The only difference between a Parent Account and a Child Account is that one resides under the other. With the right settings, a Child Account can have the same unrestricted access as the Parent Account. My oldest child does not have any restrictions on
their account so it really is similar to a standard account.
