There are different ways to do this.. You can either add them on Xbox if you have not already, and log into
live.xbox.com/friends to see if they are online, and what games they are playing.

You can also set parental controls on your console to only allow them to play games up to a certain rating, certain titles, and even how long they can play. You can see how to do that
