I agree with that. My horrible experience was with a Maxtor.

 

I'm using 4tb seagate's on my bunch and all have worked perfectly.

 

OP being in a ventless encloser, it may be heat that is causing the shutter.

On the X1 data is transfered a lot faster with USB 3.0 and if you game a lot then perhaps at some point that drive got hot enough to cause it to skip.

If you were to ever replace it I would recomend getting a very well vented Desktop style external, and if you can afford it, a Solid State drive.

IMO: Standard, plastic enclosed external drives were designed for backing up data, not transfering it to and fro at breakneck speeds. Oh sure they can do it, but exausting the heat which will buildup in the encloser isn't good for them.

Just to say, I'm using the Seagate 4TB model.

It's the same one Major Nelson uses.

But you should still get Western Digital the next time you go External DLC shopping.

That's what the IT guys all say at least.
