The easiest solution would to have the torch light up the area your in when it equipped in your hand, regardless of weather you have placed it.

Another fix for the black chests is to place an object next to them, I used a torch, then removing it. The missing door sound for me is only when my hand is empty.

Also the torch is no good if your using a two handed weapon. And candle light kills your sneak shot. Torch Is only good for a one handed weapon as you can use it to block and set fire to your enemy& still have your one handed weapon out. Even if your a duel
wilder you still fight well enough with just one weapon while in the dark places. Candle light can be use with one handed or two handed mele characters. just cast it then switch back to your gear. As you should have on armor as a mele class it doesn't really
matter so much if they see you first. As a archer or Mage though it's not good if you draw crowds or git hit first.
