Top fan exhaust grille looses color

Hi everyone,

i have noticed something strange. I own the Xbox One COD-Edition. To prevent dust settle in and around the top grille i cover the right part of the xbox with a white sheet of paper and put the controller on this sheet of paper. So far so good. A few days ago
i accidently moved this sheet without taking the controller away. When i looked and the side of the paper which was faced down towards the grille i noticed some black stains on it. First i thought ok its dust, so my "trick" did not work. So i decided to take
a paper tissue and tried carefully cleaning the grille. And to my surprise the tissue had stains on it which didn't look like normal dust (maybe if i would live in an area where the air is filled with carbon black ^^). It seems the black top fan grille is
loosing color. I then took a humid cloth and tried cleaning the grille and again the whole cloth was stained. And another tissue which i used to make sure everything is dry again had similar stains on it.

To be honest i find this more than disturbing. I have never had any devices over the past 10 years which lost color that easy. And as this happens in an area where the hot air of the console is blown out i wonder what kind of *** is blown out into the air
of my room. And as my console is placed near me when i play - it troubles me even more.

So first of all i want so aks if someone has made a similar experience? I dont know if this is a "problem" only the cod editions might have (seems the black grille is colored as the rest of the console is grey) or if a normal black x one has the same issue.

Call me paranoid but ... something seems to be wrong

Also take a flashlight and look into the fan section and see if it is spinning at all. Look over the fan blades to see if they are loaded with dust and the grill itself is free of dust and clean. Then check the right side grill as well in the horizontal
position. The fan exhausts some of the hot air out that side as well. I made a little plastic cover to cover the fan area when it is cool to keep dust at bay a bit. Cut a square of lexan or acrylic plastic to fit over the top exhaust with 4 rubber stick on
feet at each corner. My fan and grill is clean as a whistle from this practice. Hope this helps ya man.

I def. understand what your saying, it makes sense that there is more data to transfer & process while playing online which in turn creates more work for the console.

I have noticed that my slim seems to get pretty warm on the top exhaust vent above the fans (I have my slim horizontal) & a little warm on the side exhaust vent. The intake side vent has always stayed cool & actually the whole top of the console seems to
stay really cool other then the vent above the fans. (which I would think is normal due to the fans moving the hot air out of the enclosure).

That is very strange indeed! You're not covered the grille while you are playing games are you? As that is where the air flows out from, so if you are block that then it may be getting hot causing the paint to run?

I've done a bit of searching and cannot find another case where this is happened, so its definatey unique.

Do not cover the grills for any reason it says quite clearly not to obstruct them, if its got hot enough to remove paint it could cause other problems I hope you caught it in time.

 

Haha ok i should have mention it. No i am not covering the grille while playing . Its just covered when the xbox i clearly off (disconnected from any power source) and it had enough time cooling down (about 30 min to 1 hour). So the temps during playing
should not exceed the normal temps any other xbox has. The paint is not running down (so it is not that extreme). Its just that a light wipe (i do not press hard on the grill) with the cloth seems to be enough to cause the stains... i am at a loss ...

 

I don't think its paint the grill would be a coloured plastic, does your console feel hot or just warm, mine is warm even after a few hours of use,if its hot you should speak to support.

 

I am not sure if it is a basic coloured plastic. As the rest of the console has a grey finish perhaps they painted the grey grill black as they had to apply the golden cod emblem after all. So perhaps it was done in one step. But thats just a guess .

To answer your question. No the console was never hot. Even after hours of intensive playing the air coming out was just warm and the console body never felt hot. I formed a habbit of checking this from time to time on every device i own . And my xbone
did a ver very good job regarding noise an warmth.

 

I think this could only be answered by those who carry this process out, Sorry I wasn't much help.

 

You have me stumped mate, I've never heard of that before. Although you are running a limited edition console, so its possible that just no one has actually noticed it yet. I'll have to bow out, as I'm really not sure what could be causing it sorry!

Yeah i think so too. I have contacted support and they were staggered too.

Two of my friends who have the same console edition checked their consoles and it seems they have the same issue although it seems to be less intense ...

Now i am about to send in the console. Say what you will but the ms support is top so far. They took my concerns seriously (i hope the support keeps this level till the end ). I am curious about the results.

 

Yes I think anything which could involve Health & Safety would be looked at.
