I have to say I was really hoping the Play Anywhere thing would catch on. I was especially excited to try Gears 4 today on my PC and play with the wife on Xbox One.

Well, the game was installed already and I did some of the benchmark stuff but we were busy with some other stuff and did not play. Go to play this evening and there is a small update. No big deal really. Except I get an error. Windows Store error 0x80073cf9.
Talk with my son and he said his did that as well. Contact support and they say it may be a server issue. And here is where I have an issue. Sure, it may be the server. But I had an update come in for Halo 5: Forge. It was installed and would come up.
I had not really done anything with it. That update failed with the same code. That was a while back. On that app I uninstalled. Now it downloads the full 35.7 GB and then gives the same error every time. Same error message with Halo Spartan Strike and
Halo Spartan ****. I was able to successfully update a lot of other apps. Some today with no issue. But these things just will not resolve.

I used the command prompt to reset the store. I used the powershell. I did a bunch of tricks and nothing. Just seems strange that only these things would do this. And as I said Gears 4 worked until it tried to update. This is on top of doing these things
for my son and several others. Not once has anything worked for any of them. I had a friend who managed to get something to work on his PC but the issue is it would not work on none of the others. I thought it may be that I have 2 drives. But the others
do not. I am the only account and admin on my PC as are the others.

This is the Xbox forums so I will not go into all the garbage I have seen from Windows 10 recently with family and friends computers. Or my sons new PC. But re-installing stuff and having updates fail over and over and just stuff like that is getting old.
And then you have these store issues and Play Anywhere stuff having issues and you start to hope that the will at least release on Steam.

I just have hope that they will resolve this stuff before Play Anywhere (due to the Windows Store) is not viable and has no change of succeeding.

    :)

Do You Think Gears Should Venture Into the RTS Genre?

We would have 4 factions: Lambent, COG, Locust, and Stranded(Hobos with Shotguns). I thought it was cool when Halo did it, but I think Gears would have more potential to succeed at something like this. Do you think this would be good idea, or am I just
    out of my mind?

Do you have the latest version of Windows 10 installed? The update for the game may have required the latest updates for Windows itself to run correctly. If they did release on Steam then you'd still be using the Live servers to play the game and so would
probably encounter most, if not all, of the same issue.

  5. Yes. I even had an update today that for Windows 10 that went fine.

If they did release on Steam I would actually expect the updates to go smoothly. Maybe some Live server issues at times but nothing more than minor and rare as usual. This is most definitely something from within Windows 10 and the Windows Store. Honestly,
I would expect the update itself to go fine.

Did get a Windows 10 tech. on and he had me try some stuff (already had been done) and sent me an email with some instruction (already had tried those as well). This was after another CS rep could not help and said to contact the Windows 10 tech. instead.

The issue is that none of the typical troubleshooting was working even when I was on with the one rep. What I ended up doing is going to another PC that had not been updated today. Apparently the Windows 10 update removed a needed file. I updated that
PC and the file remained so I have to manually put that back in on my PC. I also found that my son's PC updated today (Windows 10 of course) and he was missing that file. So I am having him put that file back and see if that fixes his. I have a feeling
it will. If so I am going to check with the others as I am sure that file is missing. Not really sure why that happened.

Goth really needs to read this thread. I think shell find it interesting....

I thin you need to update to windows 10 version 1607 to be able to install xbox play anywhere games. While my desktop which i take pride in has no issues with the update, my HP 15ab222tx I got new last year with windows 10 a 6th gen i5 processor and AMD
R7 M360 and 8 gigs RAM the display is not as brilliant as before. It doesnt help either when manufacturers make PCs in so many kwazy configurations. GTX 9 ra ra this and i5 3 ra ra that. It gives me a headache lol. Even the newest AMD GPUs in their options
youll find that some settings have been locked out to prevent compatibility issues. A lot of people on the iinternet are having issues with the 1607 update.

  7. I have Windows 10 version 1607 and it is the most current OS build.

I always build my PCs so manufacturers configurations are of no issue. But I have been seeing these things effect manufacturer build PCs as well.

I did find that replacing the file would work, so far, for each Gears 4 install I have fixed. But nothing is working to get Halo 5: Forge working on my main PC. I did the 35.7 GB download again. It finished and then gave me the error again:

    0x800cf9 error

Package install failed. Contact the software vendor.

Check the AppXDeployment-Server event log for more info.

At least Gears 4 loaded up. I hope it is still working tomorrow. And I really hope the next update does not cause any issues.

I should actually report why the colours on my laptop's screen are very dull since I installed version 1607. I've tried device manager, going into my GPU settings. A lot of people seem to have issues with this 1607 version update. The first time I installed
on my laptop, it failed Second time was a success, but since then, the colours on the display are abnormally duller. I've went into colour calibration, display settings, device manager, I have the latest drivers for everything. I could always do a system restore
back to pre-1607 version. The UI in 1607 has changed a bit, the start menu the very left pane, the OS is now SLOWER, and when Windows asks for permission, the notification box looks a bit different too.

Well it was a MAJOR UPDATE. According to search Windows 10 versions on Wikipedia. After all, the OS is like in charge of running everything on your PC. So it is important that when they update the OS every month, they get it right (!)

  9. Smileskybird, I have had some update issues on some of my PCs where it would update and then crash saying it failed. A few times I had to do a full clean re-install due to the recovery not working. I would go into the cmd and check and the old file was
there and should have reverted back but nothing. It would not let me do a backup recovery or anything. Another issue was that I put in the Windows 10 media and it was refusing to install that at first. It gave a bunch of garbage errors. Finally it worked
but it made me nervous about subsequent updates. I have worked on a bunch of different PCs for people with random issues like this. Basic and simple setups just having odd update issues. Not all of them all the time. Very random.

As for the screen color I had a screen issue on one. The system set my graphics to 3840/2160 at 24p after the last preview update I received on this PC. I could not figure out why Gears 4 was benchmarking at 24 fps constantly. And with some checking around
the system I found out I was locked out of changing it. Not sure why. Then finally was able to get that changed after a bit of work and it is fine now. But at first it changed that, in the Windows settings not ATI catalyst which was still correct, and things
looked odd. The color range was changed as well. I had to go back in an work on that. Things just where not as clear. And that was an update AFTER 1607 OS Build 14393.221. The OS Build version is higher than that now. This issue did not pop up on my
other PCs or my sons. And one of my other PCs is exactly like this one in hardware and software. No differences.

This isn't really an issue directly related to Xbox Anywhere per say rather it's the unreliable nature of the Windows Store which is a separate thing.

I understand your frustration with it, the Win Store needs a lot of work and the team in charge of it aren't always on the same page as the Xbox team.

If you look on the built in Win10 feedback tool there is a request for maintenance tools to be added to the Windows Store that would help address issues like this, it's worth voting for.

If you already haven't tried it deleting the contents of c:\windows\software distribution can also clear the Win Stores download troubles.

The general issues you describe and trouble you have with installing Win10 sound to me like there is an unresolved problem with your PC somewhere, that's not something easily nailed down but the constant crashes and unreliability is not normal. Perhaps try
updating the bios of the motherboard and use default/safe settings, no RAM/CPU overclocks everything auto.

Lastly don't use Windows 10 preview updates on machines you want to be stable.

  11. A8T8, I did all the clearing stuff. And reset the Store and a few other things. What actually worked for Gears 4 is definitely something that most would not know how to do anyway. Definitely not something you would recommend users do.

The thing is, the Xbox Anywhere and Play Anywhere things IS the Windows Store. You have a feature that is advertised. And then the distribution method has these issues.

And it is NOT an issue with my PC. The Windows 10 install problems I have seen reported around on plenty of Windows tech. sites before. It has to do with Windows 10 itself. I have seen it happen on way to many setups that are fine to being with. Bios,
fully updated. All drivers are kept up to date. I know it might be hard to believe but I honestly know what I am doing. My wife even talked to a MS tech. for Windows 10 (that was where the MS rep that first helped her guided here to speak with) and they
could not figure out the issue and ended up emailing here a list of things to try. Things that had already been tried. No identifiable issues. And I would believe it was my PC if I did not have this issue on a few myself and know of others as well.

I also fully understand not using preview with machines you want to be stable. But I have seen these issues with non-preview machines. The Gears 4 error is related to how Windows 10 and Windows Store work. I fixed it for several people. My son has a
Dell and there was nothing stopping the update. The game itself installed fine. Oddly, there where issues on machines with 1 drive and 2 drives. So it is not a c: and d: thing like some thought.

And not 1 thing works with Halo 5: Forge. My son could install that and update it fine. As well as other apps. Only Gears 4 issues. Myself, I had the Gears 4 issue and the same with Halo 5: Forge. Fixed Gears 4 but the Forge will not do it. I had the
bundle with the Halo app. I uninstalled and tried to re-install for a fix when nothing worked. Now the app did re-install. But Halo 5: Forge will not. It is so strange because I have be troubleshooting so many of these kinds of issues with Windows 10 and
Windows Store. So much more than with any previous Windows and that includes Windows 8. No real consistency.

My only other issue so far is that I played Gears 4 on PC and later when to play on the Xbox One. Well, it told me I was playing elsewhere but then crashed. We played Horde and it was great. My son played on PC while my wife and I where on Xbox One consoles.
I also tried to be on PC while my wife was on Xbox One and it worked. Her console is my home console so we where game sharing. I was worried that play anywhere might cause issues with game sharing but it did not which is great.
