  1. This Week in Gaming History

I thought it was time to start a new thread with inspiration from Darkrplayer2 and his historical N64 thread.

Though we are all so different, we do all share something in common and that is gaming. So why not discuss the history of gaming? Share your thought's and experiences with gaming history, It can be this day last year as long as it's not tomorrow.

So I'll start this off with the 26th and 27th of October in gaming history, I know there is over 100 entries but I'll stick to the most interesting.

On this day the 27th of October. In 2010 the Complete edition of GTA4 was released on PS3, 360 and steam in the U.S In 2008 Little Big Planet was released in the U.S and Canada for PS3 In 2006 Bully was released on PS2 in New Zealand and France In 1994 Cool
Boarders was released on PS1 in Canada.

And the U.S In 1988 Leisure Suit Larry Looking For Love was released for DOS, LSL was like the most adult rated game at the time In 1983 Telnet Japan Co started as a developer and publisher of home video games Next in Line is a few from the 26th of October
In 2012 Dark Souls prepare to Die edition is released for 360 and PS3 in the U.K In 2010 Dragon age Ultimate edition is released in the U.S for ps3 and 360 In 2010 Fable 3 is released for 360 In 2007.

The witcher is released for Windows in Europe In 2004 Grand Theft Auto San Andreas is releases for the PS2 in the U.S In 2000 on the 26th the PS2 had about 20 games released, noted are SSX, Ridge Racer 5 and Street Fighter EX3 In 1998 F Zero X was released
on the N64 In 1998 Rival Schools was released on the PS1.

Almost missed this one, In 2000 The Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask was released on the N64 In the U.S. So there you go, that's the last couple of days in gaming history, there are allot missing. Not sure about the rest of you but I have personal memories from
    almost all of these games.

Edit: This stupid formatting will not recognize the spacing, sorry for the wall of text

  5. Haha, awesome! I look forward to a lengthy discussion about historical moments in gaming!

The one that stands out on that list for me is Majora's Mask, I remember how much hype I had for the game and I must admit I was slightly let down as I liked playing more as adult/teenage link. I still have the game in my N64 collection and you can beat
I went through the pain of getting the adult link mask which you can only use in boss fights.

You forgot about the 26th of October: the 10th anniversary of GTA: San Andreas released on the PlayStation 2 with at least 27.5 million copies sold on that one console alone. 10 years later, they've re-released it on the Xbox Marketplace with 720p, Achievements
and the enhancements from the mobile versions. Little late, but can't believe it's not up there.

  7. ^Well we did kind of have a big discussion about GTA3 in the other thread, so I can see why Red may have chosen to exclude it from this thread.

Really as the creator of the thread and bringer of information, I'm not going to be on Red for his choices. Keep up the good work!

@gamerexpress - I wouldn't add something from 2 days ago this year This Week in Gaming History ;) And if you check my post, GTA San Andreas is most certainly there from 10 years ago. Believe, it is up there.

  9. Double Post, Also, thank you for the editing Digital express. Now I have a little bit of time so can discuss Majoras Mask. This game was huge for it's time, I had ordered the U.S version and owned a Japanese N64. I ordered and adapter for my n64 to play
U.S games only to realize that all I needed to do was remove 2 pieces of plastic to play U.S games on a *** console. So I had the game and the console but had to wait weeks for the adapter to turn up from Hong Kong that I didn't really need anyway. The game
was an Epic Zelda game and I'd play it again in a Heartbeat. Nintendo took a risk with a Cartridge based console for this time and in all honesty I nevre knew whether it ever payed off. As per usual, Nintendo was successful with their In-house games. Truly
a great gaming time in history.

I always thought it was funny that censorship forced a better title for a game.

Bully was called Canis Canem Edit here in the UK and other PAL regions because Bully was too suggestive and seemed to promote the act. I just think Bully is a pants name for a game. Especially since you don't really play as a bully in the game. lol

Canis Canem Edit means Dog Eat Dog and is the school motto and is a much better, more interesting title for a game/franchise IMO. {=)

  11. Really? Is it still called that? Your post kind of confused me because you said censorship changed it from bully, but then say it 'was' called Canis Canem Edit.....?

I disagree that it's a better title for the game though, sounds like a bunch of gibberish to this Aussie who's from a PAL region, haha. =p

The Playstation 2 original was called Canis Canem Edit. The later reboot on later platforms was simply titled Bully in the UK. It's just latin, and it's the school motto in the game, so it fits, and isn't gibberish if you play the game. =)

Metal Gear Solid... gibberish title. Psychonauts... lol Video game titles are often gibberish until you play the games. I doubt the board responsible for having Bully changed played it, but meh, luckily Canis Canem Edit, meaning Dog Eat Dog, better fits
what the fictional school and the dynamic of the game is about IMO. Bully just... doesn't.

And hey... gamers learn some latin. Double trouble.

That's my point though, in my opinion a title should have some kind of meaning before you play it and there's huge implications to having the right title for your game in a marketing sense.

At least with Bully I imagine the game is based around a child in a school, it doesn't necessarily mean you're the bully yourself. The other title means absolutely nothing to majority of the world.

Again, Metal Gear Solid makes me imagine a game that has some fairly hectic moments throughout, like an action title.

Psychonauts makes me think of psycho astronauts (I have no idea what the game is about, haha).

Canis Canem Edit, just makes me go wut? If it was actually 'It's a Dog Eat Dog World', I would get that because school is much like that. So we'll have to agree to disagree on this one my friend. Latin title = fail for me.

  14. This game could really do with a sequel and I'm hearing rumors about a rockstar "Project" for next year. The title Canis Canem edit annoyed me so much that I bought bully on import. It turned out to be an excellent game imo, excellent enough for me to buy
it for the 360 and Wii.

Metal Gear Solid just sounds wrong. I have a proto of the worse Metal gear name ever, It is Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater. Doesn't leave much to the imagination.

There is allot for today and this week, but I'll leave it until the end of the week.

  15. It's funny because Argon just HAD to mention two games I've never played, so I guess if my description of those games are off, he's proved his point that those names are stupid.

Snake eater? Hahaha, yeah ok, I'll give you that, terrible name.

All good Red, we'll leave the discretion of this thread to you, being the bringer of information!
