IGN reports on the fact that Call of Duty Advanced Warfare takes up over 14% of the Xbox One's internal HDD, as shown

here. Why do they think this is even news when Xbox One owners already have official support for external HDDs on their consoles? IGN even mentions the external HDD support, but conveniently for them, not until the end of the article. I'm willing to bet
that they're thinking most people won't read that far (likely only glancing at the article's title and moving on). What are your thoughts on this?

No complaints from micro soft ever!! Yeah i had red ring once but the support they gave me to get it fixed was simple and great..

 

Did not read the article but it could be that they are posting these things for people who do not have external drives. Shocking maybe, but not everybody does. And I am sure most do not go into a console purchase thinking about purchasing an external drive
either.

 

Call of duty AW can be pre download since today on Xbox one (this is a news)....The rest is just journalist bs....

It does come in handy to know how much hdd space a game will take up but to be honest they could have left it as around 40gig is the average install size but its igns click bait threads all people will read is it takes 14% of hdd and start a flame war

 

I don't even mind the 14% comment so much, since it does give you a nice comparison. I do, however, get irritated by the sarcasm shown in those couple of sentences. Saying it takes up 10% of the 500 GB hdd, then, 'oh, wait, no, it's really 14% after you
take into account the OS'.

 

it will be the same size no matter the console so the article was just flame bait.

 

I don't have an external HDD, and currently have no plans to get one.

 

IGN is pro sony anti microsoft, just look at their reviews

 

More than likely the reason that IGN didn't mention external HD support is that's not an acceptable solution.

External HD's are designed for storage not to run games off. People are going to be buying these multi-TB external drives, playing CoD off them and wondering why they are replacing them every 6 months. With the exception of a few companies they are not ventilated
so the continuous data transfer causes heat that significantly reduces the life expectancy.

It's significantly more cost effective and performance increasing to replace the internal drive but MS has made that very difficult to do ( and they're is still some debate if the recent updates support unformatted Sata drive replacements).

That gives MS the ability to start releasing the "special edition" consoles with larger HD's. It's exactly what they did last gen.

I prefer an external drive...that means I don't have to bring the console with me to play at my friends or relatives...would like to see the stat comparison of internal:external drive failure rates. I also think the other guys are also going to be releasing
larger HDD edition consoles...Its what these companies do.

 

The "other" guy has a replaceable internal drive just like last gen. Only people that would be buying larger HD capacity consoles from them are just to lazy to replace it themselves.

It'll be difficult to find a comparison in failure rates because internal and external drives aren't used for the same thing. I can't think of another scenario where an external drive would be used for continuous data transfer except the One. Laptops. PC's.....you
simply replace or install another internal drive.

 

So...you are assuming after 6 months; external drives being used by xbox one will start to fail...because you made it sound like a fact. How about we wait and see all these drives fail before we start saying such as a fact?

 

It is fact.

Continuous data transfer generates heat. Heat is the enemy of all electronics. If you buy an external drive enclosed in a plastic case that can't dissipate the heat you'll reduce the life expectancy of that device. My current PC rig has 8 fans in it, I've
owned water cooled rigs in the past....heat is bad.

Companies like Fantom design their external drives with larger cases and made of aluminum just for that reason. Your typical external drive is designed to be small, portable because it's for backing up or moving files and shouldn't be getting hot.

If someone isn't already working on it, I think in the near future we'll see an external being marketed to the One community in a larger case with a fan.
