Thieves guilds compared

I always complained about the Skyrim thieves guild being petty with dirty tricks and propping up an evil patron. Even the main quest is about betrayal not thievery. My contention was that the earlier questlines in Morrowind and Oblivion were better because
they were either Robin Hood types quests or straightforward thievery from rich folk with no ulterior motives. It occurred to me though that I had never finished the Oblivion thieves guild. I quit when I kept being caught trying to steal the bust and never
went back. So I did.

Tonight I finished the entire thieves guild and it is as I expected. There is no killing especially early without paying a blood price. There are other consequences if you kill anyone other than some vampires. The quests are a real test of stealth skills.
When I tried to break the argonian out of prison I got caught 3 times before I finally decided to walk backwards so I could catch the guard with a charisma spell in the face before he could arrest me, and I tried it in a full chameleon suit, an invisibility
potion and jumping off the bridge before we got to the end. The ultimate heist not only tests your ability to sneak but severely tests your marksmanship. I enjoyed these much more than I did any of the ones in Skyrim.

Help! "A Cornered Rat" Quest will not start *Minor spoiler*

It's cause of the thieves guild that the quest does not work you fools! Don't do the thieves guild if you want to get past diplomatic immunity. If you get way to far into the thieves guild then it won't continue. Even completing the thieves guild doesn't
fix it.

 

Joining A Faction

The Dark Brotherhood and the Thieves Guild sometimes interact, but not in ways you see. If you talk to people in the Thieves Guild, you will hear of the Guild using the Brotherhood. If you get far into the Brotherhood, you will start using the Thieves Guild
for favors.

 

I found that the people who needed to die in Skyrim's Thieves Guild questline were generally despicable, power mad d o u c h e's.

There are a couple in the guild I wish I could kill and get away with it. None more than Dirge, he's mouthy and I disapprove of his very existence. I've beaten the life out of him a number of times, sniped him from total concealment, yet the Guild members
always know it was me, so I reload so I can still cozy up to Vex... she's a babe. Can't blame Delvin for getting a little randy when her fine *** strolls by...

So in earlier ES games the guild members are less apt to do you in?

Those wandering thieves in Skyrim always seem to want to kill me, Guildmaster no less, when I decline their offer to empty my pockets. So they end up dead. I was approached by a thief in The Reach and told him to get stuffed when he asked for money. The
situation deteriorated, I punched him in the face... then went ethereal and jumped off a ledge and the dumb*** followed me, bouncing down the mountainside to his demise. haha!

 

He jumped off after you? That is so crazy.

No, in Oblivion, the thieves don't attack you on the road though there are still bandits but they are unassociated with the thieves guild. In Oblivion you only meet a few of the guild members and they are harmless. There are no scum like Dirge and definitely
no one like the Blackbriars. The boss is of the robin hood school of thievery and the final quests you receive from him are aimed at him getting his life back. In Morrowind, the final series of quests to become guildmaster are more in the way of reverse thievery
where you have to return something secretly.

There are some tricky places. You are sometimes told by the grey fox himself that blood price is lifted for some aspects of a quest but you can still get in trouble with the law or another guild so it is best to not kill anyone except vampires. You also
have to be sure you don't steal from your fences.
