Thief - Anyone ordered?

Well...

The good is that I'm enjoying myself playing it so far.

The bad is that it's the ugliest game on the XBox ONE.

I love sneaking around and stealing stuff.

I love that most of the time I feel I've "earned it" when I've stolen something or outsmarted the guards or civilians, even though there are a few moments where the A.I. does seem particularly stupid but what game is perfect?

I'm not so keen on this game being a giant rip off of "Dishonored" as far as taking place against an 18th Century revolution with an oppressive "police state" as a backdrop.

The rest of the XBox ONE's gaming catalogue outshines "Thief" visually to the point that it looks like an eyesore at times.

But the gameplay is good enough that at least you can play.

Rent it or get it a little cheaper and though you're bound to feel let down by the graphics you shouldn't feel as stung.

My wife very kindly picked me a copy up today so it was a nice surprise.

I look forward to giving it a try over the weekend if I can drag myself away from Plants Vs Zombies lol

 

@Azreal008uk - So this game rips off Dishonoured despite being released 14 years prior to it. It's games like Thief that inspired others like Dishonoured or even Splinter Cell.

Know your gaming history better

 

Allow me to suggest you read your Forums better.

To help you I've highlighted the relevant information in red.

Stealth is a genre and the original "Thief" series is a paradigm for that genre.

But if you'd read through the whole post you would understand my criticism is not suggesting that "Thief" pinched the concept of stealth from "Dishonored". It's that it pinched the dystopian totalitarian regime with Steampunk overtones from "Dishonored".

For those worried that you're going to be led by the nose on a very linear path the first mission you do for Basso (part of the story) does seem like this and suggests that many reviewers did not personally play beyond this point.

After this it does seem to open up a bit in the sense that there's more Free exploring and Basso will then have a huge list of "personal requests" for you to fulfill which take place as side missions while you're not progressing the story.

As I become more familiar with my abilities, what I can do and can't do, how my powers and skills work, then it becomes more fun to play.

I've played the Original XBox version in the past.

This is more fun than that one and still keeping me interested.

 

Played for a couple of hours last night and really enjoyed it, I can see already this is a game I will play more than once, not sure why you think it's an ugly title Az? I thought the environments looked fantastic, Nicely detailed and great lighting.
and it's a bargain for £34!

 

I agree Genchy, not sure where Az is coming from saying it looks bad, I think it looks great. The rain effect is a bit "meh" if you stand to look at it hitting the ground but otherwise I think it looks good all round.

 

I find it looks bad compared to the rest of the stuff you can play on the XBox ONE.

I suppose even if I didn't have "Ryse", "Dead Rising 3", "Forza 5", "Ghosts", "Battlefield 4", "Zoo Tycoon", "Fifa '14", "Lego Marvel Heroes", "Tomb Raider", "Black Flag" and "Garden Warfare" to compare it to I'd probably be complaining they pushed for the
"Next Gen" leap a bit too soon.

The environments are well designed but the textures seem a little muddy to me. It's supposed to be a drab environment but "Remember Me" showed us you can present a drab environment and still make it look special.

Even the Collectible Loot looks like it was "re-done" to make it look 'next gen' rather than simply being next gen.

Little graphical hiccups here and there don't help either.

Thief is supposed to be a Tripple AAA title and this doesn't feel like it has the polish it should have to me.

That being said I'm still playing it and enjoying myself doing so but I think you can see what some critics are getting at when they suggest that the developers "missed a trick" here.
