  1. The Trouble with appLICATIONS

Ok, this is a thread intended to help frustrated individuals out there. I know they're out there because I've read their posts all over the internet, seeking answers. This is specifically for Twitch. I know other appLICATIONS function the same way, I've
    tested them.

So I downloaded the Twitch appLICATION, signed up, linked my account, bla bla bla, and went to broadcast for the first time. NP. up and running, although it needs some changes, and all was well. So, time comes for me to participate in real life, shut the
console down and go about my business. I start up the console after some days have gone by, set up to broadcast so my fiance can watch while she works out of state, as we are NOT buying two X1's just so she can play DA; I. Well upon the initial setup to broadcast,
I cant seem to get past the second page on twitch. I immediately start to get a rise in blood pressure, as I really HATE surfing the ol' internet just to find answers as to why my $500 next gen console doesn't work as advertised, come across a plethora of
questions, of course with no answers and come away from the experience with an even higher blood pressure index as this is nothing new to not find ANY answers.

New day. I turn on the ol' boat anchor that is the X1. Start some troubleshooting of MY own. Uninstall Twitch, reinstall Twitch, and lo n behold it works. Turn the system off, back on, go to broadcast, same problemo, it no work. Uninstall, reinstall, it
works. Me thinks hmmmmmm....then...AHfiggingHA, this is a WINDOWS game console, and you must treat it as such.

GO into settings, select ENERGY SAVING under the power selection. This DISABLES fast boot up, which as anyone with windows os experience would know, is SLEEP mode. It DOESN'T shut all applications down, which again as windows os users know, sometimes SCREWS
up some APPLICATIONS, or the proper term, PROGRAMS functionality.

I start the NEW test with less than hopeful attitude, turn off console, turn on, which takes about 7 seconds longer, and actually starts programs up, sign in, after 4 steps of course because the whole family has profiles on here, fire up DA; I, it logs into
the EA severs instead of being disconnected, and I snap, I'm going to start referring to that as baby bumping, making up my own slang here, start up and the broadcast and whaddaya know, it works.

Moral of the story, if you're unfortunate enough to have dropped some serious coin on a broken, windows game console, YOU might possibly be the best troubleshooting tech for your device, just remember your training, and oh yeah, make sure and change that
power setting so that PROGRAMS shut down properly.

    :)

  2. PLEASE HELP! New update issues!

Hey Steven, sorry to hear about the connection issues when using those apps! For clarification, is this only occurring with certain applications, or with all applications? Have you tried deleting and re-installing the applications you're having trouble with
    currently?

Or, you know, you could press the menu button on the apps when you're done with them and select "quit" - getting in the habit of closing down your apps after using them (since they don't close automatically) can significantly reduce the strain on your console,
just like any PC. The Trouble with appLICATIONS ;)

  6. So instead of shutting down the console properly and letting it properly shut the PROGRAMS down, you are suggesting I use the cumbersome interface to open each PROGRAM and manually close it? Which begs the question, why would that even seem like a logical
thing for a software designer to require the GAMER to even have to do? STRAIN, on this supposed "NEXT gen" console...seriously? I thought this thing was supposed to be loaded with horsepower and could babay bump all these PROGRAMS at one time? Strain? Pretty
sad state of acceptance when our new fangled 21st century game box is STRAINED by PROGRAMS, yet we put a man on the moon in 1969!!

So Twitch doesn't work after a reboot? I'm not exactly understanding what the actual issue your having is.

I agree, the manually shutting down of apps is annoying and as any PC gamer knows it isn't actually removing the fingerprint on your resources, the only way to be sure your clean is to reboot.

They decided to go the multi-tasking route with the One and with limited hardware resources that was asking for trouble. As we get more apps, many of which will be poorly optimized we'll see more issues (memory leaks, etc) that will impact peoples gaming.
Troubleshooting will be a nightmare because you have so many variables.....welcome to PC gaming on the console.

    The Trouble with appLICATIONS

The only reason you have to do a full shut down and restart for twitch is if you change your settings esp. privacy settings to allow you to broadcast. Same as some other OS's that require a reboot.

It's worth mentioning you said your turned off and on but did not do a hard reset to clear the cache.

Randver is quite right with regards third part apps and using the multitasking OS, I do however prefer this kind of OS over a linear version and think we should just complain about these third party apps until they sort memory leaks and bugs out.

I <3 this thread and its discussion of APPlications.

Get into the habit of quitting unused APPlications.

Is the Twitch APPlication even good? I know that you can stream using the Elgato software that I have with my capture card, and at least there you can give live commentary. Just curious.

  10. The Twitch appLICATION is a lotta fun yes. I do enjoy it. It even works on tablets and you can view other peoples streaming games from whatever console or pc they are on. Now, I should not and will NOT do a hard reset just to get something to work. That's
not the way it was intended to be used and I will not use it that way. @f00x, I don't go in every single time I log on and change my privacy settings, I set them once, as I should, and let it be. Seriously, changing privacy settings is your answer? You're
assuming we all, who've had problems with it, are changing privacy settings every what, 5 minutes? Why? I was clear in what I stated about shutting down. The power management tool in your settings has two options, under the power mode tab. Either instant on,
which does NOT shut running programs down, but rather puts them to sleep, which is not acceptable to ALL applications ways of running, hence the non functionality after instant start up, or let's call it wake up since that's what it is, and Energy Saving,
which completely shuts down ALL running programs PROPERLY, therefore when you reboot, not wake up, reboot the system, they all function correctly, unless the server end of them is hosed in anyway. As I stated, I posted this in the effort to help people who
had the problem I did and were getting nowhere with tech support or forums because most people would rather just point out that the user must be at fault and troll instead of OFFERING a solution.

The solution is to reboot. I do it on my PC before I play any resource hungry game or after I've launched numerous programs.

The people that are going to have issues are the ones believing that using the quit feature is freeing up 100% of the resources that were being used by that program. Programs have always left processes running after shutting them down since we've had PC's
and the One is basically a PC.

I don't think there is another solution other than software developers doing a better job of optimizing but that hasn't happened in 30 plus years so I wouldn't hold your breath.
