So, firstly, I'd like to ask those who read this thread to watch (and listen) to this.

When playing Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, my Xbox One sounds approximately like this. At about six feet away, with the game noise, I can't really hear it (the fan, I assume), but this noise has a definite (annoying) presence when I'm 1-3 feet away from
the console. However, it doesn't make the same noise when I play Sniper Elite 3 or the Master Chief Collection. I'm considering having it serviced, since my Warranty is good for a few more months, but only if the cause of the noise will eventually create some
hardware malfunction. Shadow of Mordor, and for that matter, my other games all play fine, so the only issue, atleast superficially, is the annoying fan noise. I can ignore it, as stated, but I won't if it will create a hardware problem. So, have any here
had problems stemming from loud fans besides mild irritation?

Additionally, I wanted to ask if it is necessary to clean out your Xbox One HDD before sending it in to be serviced. I heard that you were supposed to do this with the Xbox 360, or risk having your data wiped from the HDD. Is it the same for the Xbox One?

    :)

@ngocphi I tried your suggestion with no success

@XSV N1T3MAR3 is there a direct contact for Microsoft Support, I thought the forum was the best option?

Okay, yes there seems to be a minor fan issue. I would just continue to watch it. Depending on when your warranty is up I would service it before it ends if you are still concerned.

No, you don't have to clean your HDD. All of your saved game data is on the cloud

  5. 1st, I don't own a X1, but from the link, and from what you're describing. I would send it in now.

Some games, whether disc based or digital, can put a lot of strain on hardware(s).

Example: Lets say you're all digital, the HDD which is only 5200rpm and not a solid state HDD has to keep up with a transfer demand that CAN often task it beyond it's tolerances and as a result builds up heat pretty quick. Which in turn forces the fan to
    work double duty.

Also, the way optical drives are today, a chip along the outer edge of a disc can also cause that noise. But since X1 copies everything to the HDD and runs it from there. I doubt that would be the cause here. But check em away just to be sure.

Thus in my opinion, I would get it serviced now and not wait around for a complete failure to occur.

  6. There is no chip on the disc, and I'm fairly certain the Xbox One is immune to overheating. The only place you can feel heat at all is over the top vent, and that is normal according to Microsoft. It has three vents. One on each side, and one on the back,
and they all pull in a lot of cool air. I can feel it easily.

No electronic device is immune. There can be issues at time of manufacture that do not show up until after the device has been used for a bit. And some of these can cause the console to overheat. I have had top quality devices that generally are known
to be quality and have had issues. And the fans working does not mean there will not be an issue that causes overheating.

As for that sound I would guess it is the fan. All of our consoles are quite and I sit pretty close to the one on my desk that is hooked to my monitor. The others a quite as well. But these fans can have that issue. I had one like that on a PC case I
purchased for a build. I replaced it myself with a new one I had purchased for another system that ended up dying before I installed it (purchased to replace very noisy fan). That new one had an issue with noise as it make a loud clicking sound although
    it worked. So it happens.

The only thing I would be worried about is the hdd. Get really close and listen and make sure it is the fan. You should be able to tell. I have an hdd right now that works but makes a little clicking noise. And I thought it was the fan that sits by my
drives. Did some checking and it was an hdd. Usually indicates they are dying and it is an older drive. But you never know.

Are you still under warranty? If so make sure to have this thing fixed before it expires. Even if it is the fan. Would hate to see your fan quite and mess up the console.

It is the fan for sure. Still, I'm hesitant to send it in for another reason. The repair horror stories where the Microsoft repair crew does more damage than good. I don't want to send it in for three weeks, only to have to turn around and send it back AGAIN.
    Hm.
