So I have got a new xbox series S. My friend has an Xbox one. We both are thinking about buying the next fifa 22. So my question is if he buys the standard one and I buy the next gen one - will we be able to play together?

same one you have now from all the repairs i've seen. Don't even expect an HDMI version of the old console if yours isn't HDMI (why ms has all this old stock that they know is sub-par is beyond me!)

There is no legit way to use the old style hdd on a Slim.

Unfortunately the game is demanding. You and a friend cannot play on different consoles. FIFA 22 is only available on Xbox Series X | S.

no, sir, incorrect. Most xboxes that go in for repair (especially if it is an older one) you will be sent a similar model, but it MOST LIKELY won't be your xbox - that is why you aren't supposed to send your hard drive. You won't get a newer console type,
but it more than likely won't be yours. Occasionally they will send yours back, but they tend to send a refurb or newer version of your console type.

Unfortunately, EA doesn’t support cross platform play for FIFA 21 (see here), and it’s likely they’ll do the same for FIFA 22. Unless your friend is upgrading soon, hold off on pre-ordering. However, it is worth noting that you are able to move your Ultimate Team to the next-gen consoles without starting from scratch.
