Looks alot more promising to grab beside s just playing your movies with it, you can also see it in the dark since it will have backlighting and it can replace the kinect for voice commands so you don't have to shout at the tv. A BIG plus in my book!!

  2. Remote which does not require line of sight to the box

    Hello

I am new to xbox with Kinect and have set it up as our central media device. Before this, we used the Sony NSZ-GT1 which had pretty much all the media features which xbox has but a nicer remote. My wife is very used to that and I would like to recreate that
with the xbox. From what I have read, all the 3rd party remotes/media remote need a line of sight to the box.

Is there a remote which has QERTY keyboard and media functions but does not require line of sight to the box (kinect is ok)

    Thanks

Great response, ForEvaFaithless. Good info and I largely agree.

However, with today's (5/13) announcement that the Kinect is being un-bundled, isn't a One media remote that has numbers even MORE needed? If someone gets the Kinect-less console, but still wants to use the TV/cable functions, I'm thinking a new, all-in-one
    remote is critical.

Unfortunately media remote with not work using the Kinect less console with the 'TV' app, as the IR Blaster within the Kinect is required to control the Satellite and Cable boxes. However the normal playback of movies streaming or watch DVD/Bluray will
still work as the media remote it self using the IR point on the Xbox One console.

Another option can't be bad...especially useful for those with speech impairments and/or are mute, and those that detest the kinect.

The remote uses its signal sent TO the KINECT then uses the Kinect IR to change the channel or volume on your TV...

Not sure about you.... but I have always used my OEM remote for changing the channels on the TV...just use the voice/kinect for pause, play rewind, mute and volumes...

    The article said:

"Aside from the features already stated, the Media Remote has the ability to control TV power as well as volume though the use of Kinect. It uses IR blasting to send live signals to the TV or receiver. Thus, the new device can help consumers watch, listen,
and switch among various experiences instantly."

The Kinect is still apart of the system, you just aren't talking to it anymore.

  7. So, if the remote replaces the Kinect & voice commands, how do I tell it to "go to Titanfall" for example that I can't already do with my own controller?

OK GG I hope you do understand the remote DOES NOT replace the kinect but is actually A PSRT OF THE kinect.... you press channel up on the remote...the signal goes to the Kinect... the Kinect then send that signal using the built in IR to the cable box/tv

@GG The advantage of the remote over the controller is that you don't have to turn it on so it's always ready.

I own the 360 and PS3 remotes which were a much better alternative to the controller for Netflix, Hulu, etc simply for that reason.

Personally for me the voice commands on the Kinect are hit or miss so a remote will allow me to avoid having to get into arguments with my Kinect about which TV channel I actually wanted to watch.

I never it would actually replace the kinect but it's a good alternative and I used my included remote with my 360 to watch movies and not have to keep turning my controller on and this would have been great as a pack in too for the day one models...I'm
not going to fork over $25 for something I won't use alot but when it's on sale, I'll grab it. And if it can register voice commands already, it could potentially let you access games, aps, etc instead of having to yell across the room to start them.

It's actually for those that don't use Smartglass or have a tablet or phone handy.

Definitely a good alternative, I have the Harmony Ultimate which allows for the same control. Since the Harmony doesn't support the PS4, I do all my Blu-ray, Hulu, Netflix, and Amazon viewing on the XOne as I don't like using the controller for media. Now
if the XONe just got Crunchyroll ...

  15. Good to know; since I don't have Smartglass, this will be great for me. I was only asking because I thought it might be good for those who decide not to use the Kinect in ANY capacity, but I guess not.
