Can I transfer a content license from one Xbox 360 console to another?

Yes, you can transfer content licenses from one console to another once every four months.

If your console was recently repaired or if you’ve purchased a new console, use the license transfer option on your console to transfer content licenses. Here’s how:

    1. On your console, sign in to Xbox Live using the gamertag that you used to purchase the content.
    2. Go to Settings and select Account.
    3. Under Your Billing Options, select License Transfer.
    4. Follow the instructions to transfer the content licenses.
    5. After the licenses are transferred, you need to download the content again to update the local licenses. For information about how to do this, see

      Download content you’ve previously purchased
      .
After you follow these steps, content can be used by other profiles on your console and when you’re not connected to Xbox Live.

You really should specify that you need to recover the account on the
new console, then sign in. Since it didn't specify, I signed into my old console (that already had my gamertag and licenses on it) and followed the instructions above. I hit Y to read the "more information" section,
then hit A, thinking it might tell me what to do next. Instead, I got a message saying my license was transferred...to the same console.

After recovering my account on my new console, it told me that I'd have to wait 4 months to transfer again. I spent ~25 minutes talking to Xbox Support on the phone, only to be told that there was nothing that could be done. It might seem like
simple instructions, but if it's something that you refuse to fix, you really need to be more clear in your instructions.

    :)

Vertania hey there The License Migration instruction page really need to be fixed... :)

I'm sorry to see that you are having issues with the way the instructions are explained and of course, for the problem you have encountered now that you have licence transferred on the wrong console. With that being said, I myself find them to be pretty
    self explanatory, for example

If your console was recently repaired or if you’ve purchased a new console, use the license transfer option on your console to transfer content licenses.

That section of the page tells me that I would be doing the transfer on the new / replacement console. Although it doesn't blatantly come out and say 'do these steps on the console you want the licences transferred to' it does imply it through the above
sentence. Or at least that's how I read it.

Either way, there isn't a lot I can say that you probably don't already know. Which is that when the 4 months come to pass, you would have to complete this process on the console you are going to be using as your own.

If you have any feedback to provide, please feel free to post it on the brand new feedback site

    I hope this helps.

    Many thanks,

Still, how hard would it be for them to add one word to the instructions ("1. On your NEW console...")? It might save someone from making this mistake in the future.

I don't even have a use for the new system now because of this. My only options are to buy an overpriced network adapter, let the system collect dust for 4 months, or sell it.

Do you not have any disc-based games at all? Those would work without issue on the new system, as would any games you were to purchase from now on. Also, provided you are able to connect to Live all your games and content would work.

Which model console did you get? The external wireless network adapters are only needed for the oldest model there is but the S and E have them built-in, and in all cases if you can get the console close enough to the router you can use a wired connection.

My "old" console that I had before is actually a slim model with built-in wireless. The one I just bought is the old fat model. I intended to put the slim one in my living room and the new one (with the licenses) in my bedroom. The wireless router is in
a position downstairs where I can't realistically run a cable to either system.

I have plenty of disc-based games, but I also have hundreds of dollars, if not $1,000+, worth of digital games and DLC that I've purchased. Many of the disk-based games won't even let me continue a saved game if I don't have the DLC installed. This is a
huge inconvenience that defeats the purpose of even buying the new system.

The License Migration instruction page really need to be fixed...

(Tried editing the last message, but apparently it didn't go through)

I meant to say that I can put the fat system in the living room and run a really long cable from it to the wireless router, but only temporarily. I could download what I need to overnight, then take it upstairs, but I'm not going to leave a cable running
across the living room floor for 4 months.

I purposefully avoided specifics like this in my original post because it doesn't really address the issue I had with the instructions. They could be made much more simple by either adding "On your new/refurbished console..." to the step 1 or adding some
kind of extra confirmation screen during step 4 (though I suspect the former solution would be much easier). Even if my situation can't be helped, I would really like to see the instruction page updated so that something like this might be avoided in the future.

OK, well I can try to make the request that someone update it with slightly clearer wording, but unfortunately it doesn't seem like there's a great deal more we can do for your specific situation.
