  1. The Good Old Days

I wish video games were like the good old days. Remember back in the day when video games were long? And it took you forever to beat because there was just so much running around you had to do so much figuring things out you had to do just to get to the
next level. All of that find this to unlock that and once you unlock that you can now go forth and to whatever. Remember when you used to have to play through the whole game to unlock certain content within the game and then you had to play through the whole
game again but on a harder difficulty to unlock more goodies and had to repeat this process about 3 or 4 times depending on the amount of difficulty levels a game had? Where are those days? I feel like those days have long been forgotten and why is that I
wonder. As far as gaming goes I do love a game with amazing graphics and do feel that all games should run at 1080p native.

Graphics are the icing on the cake to me but the number one most important as any real gamer will tell is gameplay. These days we lack gameplay compared to how videos games once were, it seems that graphics have been sacrificed for gameplay and I often asks
myself "Can we not just have both?" Another thing that kind of bugs me is "Season Passes" I feel season passes are pointless, I wish all developers came up with a system like UBISOFT'S UPLAY as to where you can complete certain task and earn points and use
those points to unlock additional content for your game, Such as new car packs, weapon packs, map packs, etc etc. I would really like to see season passes be removed and replaced for that type of a system.

It reminds you of how games used to be back in the day. I never really support season passes and feel that it is a waste it's almost as if developers take a fully completed game and leave us with 60% of the game and the remaining 40% is up on the marketplace
and sold either individually or it can be purchased as the so called "season pass" this is why I never really support season passes / DLC's about 98% of the time. As much as I hate to admit that I am a victim of this about 2% of the time. But for now there
really isn't much you can do because there is no other way around it at the moment. So the 2% of the time that I may actually spend money on it is if I really really really really feel that I need it. But in the end I really wish developers did get rid of
that and replace it with a feature such as UPLAY. Also I wish there was no such thing as special pre-orders. Why can there not be just one set of pre-order content for everyone. Like how if someone orders from best buy they get this pre-order bonus and if
this person orders from walmart they get that pr-order bonus. I think that is just so silly.

    :)

I have a 62inch Samsung 3DTV and after the inital "wow 3D is cool" moment we havent bothered with 3D. Although single player blacklops is pretty good for 3D but anyone who can play a FPS in 3d Should have a medal. It makes you feel sick.

An as for 14inch........Who wants a TV thats less than double the length of their weener?

Crysis 2 was much better on the eye, but again it suffered from half resolution.

Avatar 3D, really is immense in your living room.

Just because tings get more snazzy it does not necessarily improve the amount of fun you have. Fair enough we all love the beauty in our games and how well they are developed, yet for some reason the simpleness of some of those
early gems are great. I for one loved TS1 (timesplitters) and could remember playing it with a mate vs all the Ai. That was true fun.

My brother just got that old wipeout game on PS3 for free and whenever playing it he just recalls how much fun it was on PS1. Despite the game being upgraded graphically and what not he only plays it because of the PS1 one. You
always remember your first as a cheevo once sated.

    The Good Old Days

Ah the good old days... fending off packs of wild wolves to keep the mammoth I slayed to feed my club-wife and our feral children. The good old days, when a cough meant death and a splinter meant amputation and then death. Ah the good old days... if we only
knew then what we know now. Ah the good old days when money didn't exist and all you needed was a chicken and a goat to trade for a cart. Ah the good old days.

Sounds like you have the answer bro. Maybe 343 or MS could hire you out to handle all negotiations with developers and give the people what they want... free stuff. Good luck and happy hunting. /sarcasm off

I remember when games took forever b/c you couldn't just look up how to beat them on the internet. You had to play and re play them, or let your friends borrow it and see if they could beat it.

The Good Ol Days are long gone.

Now it's about profit- Not gameplay.

If a game had a glitch, it could/would be fixed. Now, DLC is announced before the game is even released.......

This generation has a lot to learn IMO.

What ever happend to having FUN playing with friends???

I predict another Gaming Depression like back in the 80's for the current "Next Gen" consoles.....

Sure sales are good but not much else........

I have to agree with Crusher here, if you got stuck on a game it was either beating your head against the wall until you finally figured it out or I would always have my older brothers friends that would help me. Either way it made games much longer.

Also OP go and play Dark Souls 1 & 2 without google and tell me the good old days are still dead!

  10. The differences with now and the good old days is that gaming is more popular now and a lot of people only have one or two hours of playtime and if you make a game too hard a lot of people will be put off because they just want
to have fun. Now I know fun means different things to different people, but I can imagine to the majority fun is not dying over and over again.

I wouldn't say Season Passes are pointless, they are there to add more content and that's what they do. I'm more than happy for that to continue as long as users aren't forced to buy, and by "forced" I mean forced (as in you have
no other option). More and more games are introducing Season Passes and that's because they sell. One thing I don't like is when DLC is announced before the game is officially released; release the full game and then announce the DLC. I guess one of the reasons
developers announce DLC before release is because people will know the game will be supported.

About the special pre-orders I guess more choice can't hurt right? Some people want a toy with their pre-orders, others wan't a book or whatever. The more choice then the more chance of people buying and that is what developers
and publishers want. It's all about profit.

Honestly, I don't know what rose-tinted glasses the OP has on, but I think games nowadays are WAY longer and lengthier than they've ever been. I think nostalgia always makes people see things differently. We tend to forget all of the crap that was put
out and simply focus on the enjoyable aspects of our past/youth.

As for season passes, I have mixed feelings. I will gladly buy them for things like The Walking Dead & Wolf Among Us, where I know I will be buying the episodes anyway, and this saves me the $5.

Obviously this thread is referencing Watch Dogs. I think the graphics look fine to me, but I also realize that if I'm looking for an "OMG!" type graphical quality, I'd play games on my uber pimped out PC, and not on a console.

  12. What's really interesting is that when I was much younger, some games took FOREVER to play and beat. When I got older I revisited some of those older games. Most I haven't played in 20+ years, I found that those games were no longer hard, and were very
fast to get through. I completely forgot how to play those games so it wasn't "Oh its like riding a bicycle, you don't forget..." and I was thinking to myself, "Why did I think these took so long and were so hard to begin with?" I think the answer is simple,
what we thought was tough when we were in our younger years, is no longer the case as we got older (from a gaming perspective). Maybe its because I continued to play games for a long time after that and just got better in general. Then again, I think age
    does play into it.

There were some games back in the day that took a long time to beat, but most of those were just repetitious. I mean you could play asteroids forever as long as you didn't get killed and the game would just continue until you did. As someone else pointed
out, I think nostalgia plays a big part in this, but I feel that we have changed as we have grown older and things that took us longer in the past to do or complete, doesn't take us near as long. One of the biggest reasons for this is our brains are more
developed as we get older. Maybe I'm wrong in this, but who really knows? Everyone's experience is always a little different.

Recently I finished the Secret of Mana and Mother, Both where lengthy and some parts not easy.

The difference today is that we have allot more consumers playing games with the gamers playing games. This results in games being easier, ya know, anyone can play this game scenario. I know very few gamers that are passionate about their gaming in 2014.
I know more people that are concerned about brand names. Unlike the old days, everyone can find what they are looking for on the internet when it comes to gaming. All my Xbox friends are true gamers imo The Good Old Days :)

    I'm ranting!

  14. When I was a nipper back in the good old 80's, games came mostly on cassette tape (well they did in the UK anyway), unless you were lucky enough to own a Commodore Amiga or Atari ST or the early 8-bit consoles, and some took longer to load than to physically
    complete!

Most games back then could be completed in a few hours, some games in less than an hour. I remember a huge amount of 16-bit computer and console games from the 90's could be completed in an hour or less.

Games these days can take several hours to complete, even the latest Call of Duty single player takes a least 6 hours. And I'll have you know that I have personally spent well over 300+ hours combined on games such as Oblivion, Fallout 3 and Skyrim.

what? this makes no sense to me. gamers are consumers. Aside from that I think you are trying to say something about casual gamers flooding the market and there are now fewer hardcore gamers? Not even sure if this is worth clarifying.

I don't think I could ever go back. I love playing old games now (Sega's past classics and the like), but for every one I still love playing, there are a dozen that make me wonder what I ever saw in them!!

Sorry, I've been spoilt too much, and I like where I am now!!

    The good old days.

The industry has really done a great job of cashing in on the 'HD' hype. Advances in technology used to be applied automatically with a small increase in price, if you compare TV images from the 70s to TV images of the 90s you will see a dramatic difference,
but the business world was a much more innocent place back then.

Like suckers we've all fallen for the 'HD' sales pitch, and now they are at it again with the '3D' hype.

I agree with the OP that games aren't primarily about gameplay anymore, they are mainly about fancy graphics and poor game engines (prime example being Call of Duty).

i played the majority of LA Noire on my Mrs' 20 odd inch SDTV and to be honest..there was a MASSIVE difference in quality/image etc. but it didn't detract from the game... it just goes to prove graphics aren't everything..

i don't think i could go back to gaming permenantly on an SDTV however but it doesn't phase me if i don't play in HD...

3D however is not for me.... i played some PC L4D2 in 3D and it was..ok.. just wasn't all that...
