the future of console hdd storage

just curious as to how big the internal hdd might be at the end of this generations life. last gen we went from 20 gigs to upwards of 500. might we see a 5 tb console on shelves in the next 7-8 years? or is being able to use external hard drives going to
stagnate the need for extra storage and we won't see much, if any, increase in internal size increase?

@lostmymind...both have expandable storage options.....Sony has a removeable HDD and Microsoft has a future update to allow external HDD

 

How to fill up 250gb of space?

So, for some reason, you feel the need to fill your HDD to capacity immediately?

Most people would want higher capacity storage to "future-proof" their console and free themselves from the limitations of insufficient storage. I've never seen anyone that regards some excess storage capability as a limitation in itself.

I guess it takes all kinds, but it does seem to be a strange thing to be complaining about.

 

Console makers are going to provide just enough HD space to not "seem" cheap but still enough to hold 10 or a few more games. But cost is what drives this. It is cheaper for them to put a 500GB drive and allow owners to purchase external than it is to
start with 1TB+.

 

I see for extrenal 10-12TB. On the console I would see 4-5TB consoles in the end this gen.

 

Well I know that later this year we will see the first 10TB Solid State Hard drive for consumers. I can only imagine as digital games get more popular and we push the boundaries on games, 3d, super realistic, etc. the files are going to be huge so Microsoft
covered their butts with the use of external hdd support via usb 3.0. The Next Gen Xbox whatever it is will probably come standard with 10 Terabytes minimum, preloaded with some games too.

 

I doubt Microsoft will upgrade the internal HDD, at least not anytime soon.

 

We already need at min 1TB if you ask me, I've only got approximately 150gb left on the Xbox One and there's only really one game I could delete off it as I've been playing all of them quite regularly.

 

I filled the 500 GB last month. I had a few games deleted waiting for the internal storage to drop. I think with the easy of moving your games around via the external that the liklihood of going real big with the internal isn't high but I think it'll go
more than a TB but most likely not until HDD cost comes down, similar to the previous generation. Personally I think external is the way to go. It's so convenient to be able to unplug go over to a friends and have your entire library at your disposal without
downloading.

Man, it makes me think of how many times I looked at my NES collection as a kid and tried to decide which games I was taking to play at my friends house. I would have killed to be able to digitally take them all lol.

External popularity is going to keep it lower than usual but the need for larger space is going to bump it up. Especially when people start getting a few years worth of games under their belts.

 

Beats using 8 MB memory cards as storage.

 

The only thing I don't like about external storage which I guess is also true for internal, is reliability. If I decide to transfer everything to an external HDD and then a year or two down the road it fails on me, all my gaming info is GONE. Very concerning.

 

I think storing your games on your external is like storing your games on the internal... if you delete the game or if your system crashes and is "irretrievable" from the HD it is still on the cloud. So it is not GONE.

 

I wish Microsoft released an official External drive.

 

@Black Wolf - Your saves auto back up to the cloud and you can redownload anything you buy stays attached to your account. The big bummer would be redownloading ALL that content you'll accumulate.

 

I think we will see 1-2tb consoles this gen but 7-8 is pushing it.
