The Evil Within - First Impressions

Really appreciate the first impressions and you saved me $60 I'll be skipping this for now but may pick it up with a price drop. The black borders and clunky controls are a turn off. I wish there was a demo so I could really see how it feels for myself
but what you described will do just fine. I also saw some gameplay where some of the AI characters were acting really dumb, like standing in one place and getting stuck on things (I hate that lol).

 

This was one of the games I've been wanting for a while but after watching more gameplay videos the more I'm put off. It just reminds me too much of the Resident Evil games (I know why) and I'm not much of a fan of those games.

 

i didnt' have any interest in this. it seemed like the run of the mill game that could have just been on 360.

 

Everyone's different I didn't like alien and thought destiny was the worst game this year but loving this I must just have strange taste

I ended up selling some other games to fund this, only onto chapter 4 but am really having fun with it. And I forgot about the borders halfway through chapter 2

And by the way, I loved alien, but destiny was absolutey rubbish

 

Hmmm... Thanks Az for your thoughts. I wouldn't mind some others opinions as there only seems to be a few who have had a crack in this thread. I have to say though, so far I'm not liking what I'm hearing or the general vibe.

This is also a game that I really wanted to play, but something Az said rang so true with me, Big monsters with chainsaws and stuff aren't really that scary anymore.... Being a normal human stuck on a space station with only gadgets and basic weapons scared
me... a lot. hahaha.

Though maybe it's unfair to compare the scenarios and I'd just have fun getting grossed out. Could you compare this to Silent Hill at all, that had like disgustingly scary things? Like you're probably more disgusted then scared? Haha.

 

Yeah, they do seem to have gone more for a "Tortureporn" vibe.

The visuals pick up when you get into chapter 3. It's actually a really gorgeous looking game in spots. It's the "dark places" that look the best. Excellent use of light and shadow.

Just so there's no confusion, your character does control very well UNLESS he's wounded. That's where clunky controls become a factor.

I went from really disliking this game to starting to enjoy myself.

 

Thanks mate, I think I might still enjoy it then, just not in the same way as Aliens.

I think that's a good thing anyway, variety the spice of life and all that!

 

I've gotten past the first 3 chapters so far.

Other than the visual style the game plays nothing like Resident Evil, ammo and weapons are very, very limited.

Stealth and environmental hazards are definitely the key to get far in this game.

But its a great game if you love true survival horror.

In a way it kind of reminds me of the Dark Souls of horror survival, its definitely not very forgiving. You will probably die, a lot.

Especially on the harder difficulties.

 

The XBox ONE seems to be offering the best experience on ANY platform.

PS 4 gamers and reviewers alike are complaining about visible frame rate drops whereas the game is smooth on the ONE.

PC gamers are complaining about textures, frame rates, visuals, letterbox format and anything else they can think of whereas the XBox ONE's visuals are beautiful, especially in the darkest places in the game.

So when it comes to this multiplatform game, if you got it for the ONE you made the right choice.

That being said, GStaff, the Community Manager for Bethesda says on their official forums that they are proactively working to improve the experience for all platforms.

 

It's a game about getting trapped in a meat packing processing plant? Watching further... hmm, has the same look and feel as Outlast. Getting chased, trapped, attacked, tortured, everything is dark, bumps in the night. At 5 mins into the video I posted
below, there is a scene straight from outlast, but it never gets old. Looks bloody and fun.

I am really glad that the Survival Horror genre is making a come back and I am so happy

But, the " totally defenseless Mouse vs Cat " thing isn't my cup of tea when I think of Survival Horror. I am more of " Resident Evil 1 to RE Code Veronica defenseless mouse vs Cats " concept

The more I play of this game the more i'm really starting to love it.

It definitely plays nothing like Resident Evil though, its more of a trial and error type game. Death will come often.

Thankfully the checkpoint system is pretty nice so usually you don't loose much progress.

The key is definitely using environmental traps, and melee weapons to your advantage. And burning corpses when possible.
