The A-button opens Steam overlay with Xbox Elite Series 2 controller on Windows

Hello all,

My Xbox Elite Series 2 controller is unusable when used wirelessly on my Windows PC. I have seen multiple threads mentioning the exact problem I'm having, which is that the A button opens the Steam overlay when in game, or the Xbox game bar for some.

This only happens when using the actual A button on the controller, not when using one of the buttons on the back that is also mapped to A.

Mind you, this controller is new out of the box, and has done this since the first time I connected it.

I checked for any updates for Windows, my bluetooth drivers or the controller itself but everything is up to date.

Now when checking on Gamepad Tester, I find there is an input called B16 that is activated at the same time as the A button input called B0.

This B16 input is NOT activated when pressing the A button on a wired connection. It is also NOT activated when using one of the buttons on the back mapped to A, which only activates the input B0, as it should...

I'm starting to think this additional input that activates each time I press A is the culprit and opens the steam overlay for me., or the Xbox Game bar for others.

I did not find any straightforward way to remove this B16 command, I've tried remapping the A button to itself hoping it would go away but that doesn't change anything.

Does anyone know what this B16 input actually is ?

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for reaching out to us about this issue! Do you have Xbox Configuration support enabled in Steam? I'd also check to see if you have any Big Picture configurations set to your Xbox controller for any reason. You can find that by going to:

Steam -> Settings -> Controller

One of our Support team, mentioned a solution that is easy and fast to do. May we know if anyone from here have tried to do remapping their Controller's button? Now, this advance Controller offers exclusive option to create profile to customize button mapping that you can do using Xbox Accessories app. Here are steps on how to create a controller profile:

Using your Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2, open the Xbox Accessories app.
Scroll to the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2, then select Configure.
Select New profile, give your profile a name, then configure your changes. For example, if you reassign D-pad down  on the face of the controller to the Y button , then the D-pad down  will act as the Y button  going forward.
When you’re done, press the B button  for the changes to take effect.

Create multiple profiles in the app and switch between them using the built-in Profile button.

Open the Xbox Accessories app, scroll to the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2, then select Configure.
In Profiles, select a controller profile you’ve created or create a new one.
Choose a slot.

You can assign a slot for up to three profiles. Press the Profile button on the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller 2 to switch between them. When no bars appear lit below the Profile button, the controller is using the default button mapping.

Assign Shift key button:

Assign buttons to act as shortcuts for system actions like “Record that” and “Take screenshot.” When you select a button to remap, choose Primary or Shift, go to the Action tab, then choose an action from the list. When you’re done, press the B button  for the changes to take effect.

Note System actions are currently not available on Windows 10.

the elite controller series 2 has Bluetooth compatibility and is therefore compatible with windows 10 too. the first release of the elite controller was before xbox was integrated into windows 10, therefore there was no need at the time for Bluetooth.

I'm sorry to hear you are having issues with your Elite Series 2 controller.

Are you having this issue on PC or an Xbox console?

Console: To configure your Xbox Elite Wireless Controller, start by opening the Xbox Accessories app. To open the app on your console, press the Xbox button to open the guide, select My games & apps > See all > Apps, and then choose Xbox Accessories.

PC: To open the Xbox Accessories app on Windows 10, press the Start button, type Xbox Accessories or choose it from the list, and then sign in. If the app isn’t installed on your PC, get it here: Microsoft Store

The Xbox Accessories app won’t detect your controller if you’re using Bluetooth to connect to your PC. Connect your controller using Xbox Wireless Adapter, or plug the included USB-C cable into the back of the controller and plug the other end into your PC.

If there is a hardware problem with your controller that cannot be resolved by troubleshooting, you may need to replace your controller. To begin:

Go to account.microsoft.com/devices
Find your Xbox Elite Series 2 controller and click on it
Scroll down and click Start Order
Confirm the serial number and choose Device

Follow through with the rest of the instructions.
