  1. Telstra 5G and Xbox

    Hello,

Calling any Australians who may be able to assist.

I've recently moved into a new place where I had a choice between Telstra Velocity or 5G. I chose 5G because I liked the idea of being able to place the modem anywhere in the house. Speeds are great and all but I've encountered some problems gaming on the Xbox Series S since using 5G and I'd like to hear if anyone else has experienced the same things or if they have a solution:

    > Packet Loss 100%

    > Latency 237 ms

    > NAT Type: seems to jump between Moderate and Open. When it's Moderate, uPnP is not enabled.

    > Download Speed: 128.47 Mbps

    > Upload Speed: 5.45 Mbps

Even with the Packet Loss and latency, I can still play online games no problem. I tested playing Destiny 2 for a bit and also Fortnite with my brother. Everything ran smoothly except for 1 thing - Xbox Party.

    Alternate Port Selection

If I manually choose a different port to change the NAT from Moderate to Open, it always returns to Moderate during Restart.

    Can't join Xbox Party

I could not join an Xbox Party with my brother (he lives in a different State and plays on PC, we don't share the same internet). I could play no problems with him but the only way we could chat was via Fortnite's in-game chat. If I started the Xbox Party and invited him, he would join and mine would spin indicating 'Connecting' before it timed out and the Party would be lost. Same thing if he started the party.

Can't stay in solo Xbox Party

The other thing I have noticed is that if I create an Xbox Party, it will automatically kick me after about a minute. I currently have a Xbox Gold subscription and have never had this issue before. 5G networking is the only new factor.

    Telstra 5G Modem

The modem model is AW1000. There does not appear to be any method for Port Forwarding on this 5G modem and I believe this is due to CG-NAT.

    Question/s

    > Does anyone have any idea why I can't join Xbox Parties?

    > Does anyone have any experience playing online games using Telstra Velocity?

Thank you for any help you can provide. Cheers.

    :)

    Hello!

My name is Dérek, I'm an independent platform consultant and I'm grateful for the opportunity to help you.

Cradle, I'm sorry about your situation.

Unfortunately, this error is due to access restrictions.

And the only way to solve it, would be configuring the modem.

But as you said, you didn't find the means to do so.

What I can advise would be to contact the provider, or the manufacturer of the device to check if it is possible to configure.

The complete required configuration would be this.

set a fixed ip for the console/PC, open the ports described below, disable and enable the UPnP function and disable the modem firewall, if you have a modem and a router the process has to be done on both devices.

Put console/PC IP in DMZ zone.

    Port 88 (UDP)

    Port 3074 (UDP and TCP)

    Port 53 (UDP and TCP)

    Port 80 (TCP)

    Port 500 (UDP)

    Port 3544 (UDP)

    Port 4500 (UDP)

You can ask ISP(Internet Service Provider) for help

That's awesome. Thank you for letting me know it worked.

I have updated my original post with a link to a Reddit post that shows the exact modem setting I was speaking of in case anyone else is faced the same issue, using that particular Telstra 5G modem.

I would still like to know why IPv6 doesn't play well with Xbox through Telstra 5G but that's probably a question I need to ask Telstra.

"Do I really need IPv6 when multiplayer gaming on Xbox Live? Or is this something I should be speaking with my ISP about?"

    G'day Cradle Mountain

Check the information in this support page, IPv6 on Xbox console.

If you are connected to the NBN get Telstra to supply their latest Smart modem and/or enable IPv6 on your network access.

When I was connected to the NBN (fibre to the home) IPv6 wasn't enabled automatically. A quick call to Telstra (ISP) and they enabled it. Choose Technical support when you call.

Using IPv6 network protocol solves a lot of the issues you have especially Multiplayer.

It is not necessary to have ipv6 enabled. You can play normally without it. What is most important is having an unrestricted connection to the servers.

If this worked for you, you can enjoy it this way!
