Technical specs for the 3.5mm jacks

Hi - I'd like to build my own XAC peripherals. Where can I find the technical specs for the 3.5mm jacks. Specifically what provides a signal across them (voltage, amperage, audio, ???) and are the uni or bi directional. Is there a protocol that provides
a confirmation that a signal has been recieved?

Can I use a standard pair of headphones with a y splitter.

I have a set of headphones which have a 3.5mm jack for audio and a separate 3.5mm jack for the mic. I have the latest xbox one controller with the 3.5mm jack. Can I simply just buy a y splitter for this to work. I understand the y splitter may need to be

looking to get a headset...

I'm looking to get a headset for my xbox one, as I've got one of the new controllers with the 3.5mm jack, my question is, can I use ANY headset with this that has a 3.5mm jack, even if its one of those cheap $10 cellphone headsets, provided it has
the required 3.5mm jack?

 

Also interested in specs for the two thumbstick USB ports.

For folks keeping track of this - to create an event that the XAC can recognize on a 3.5mm jack, you just need to short (which is to say, connect) lines 1 and 2, as shown in this diagram.
