System Update

I recently purchased a second generation Xbox 360 Pro from a yard sale for 15 dollars. It had the three red rings which I fixed and the system works fine now. Problem is, it had the NXE dashboard. I followed the instructions under updating an old 360 console,
I put the latest update on a blank CD-R and tried booting from that and it didn't work. I popped in GTA V to get the system update from a game disc. That worked, and now when I connect to LIVE it won't let me update to the LATEST version, it is only updated
as far as GTA V. Any thoughts or helpful tips? Thanks in advance.

You will not get a system update from a game disc.

If it won`t allow a system update its possible the system is banned from live, or you haven`t fixed it correctly.

Be aware self repair cannot be discussed here.

 

Ok, self repair aside (Did I ask to start a discussion regarding me repairing my ancient Xbox I purchased for 15 dollars? No, but by you bringing it up, now it's a discussion), it did take a system update from a game disc. You apparently know nothing:

If I may, I believe he wasn't asking for help repairing his console. He already did that, and was wondering why his console wasn't updating. I hope everyone of the regulars comes into this thread and sees how *** stupid you are.

 

My point was the system update he requires to get online will not be on that disc.

If he cannot get the update via normal means and seeing as the console was bought second hand and has been self repaired, there is a very good chance its been banned or has not been fixed correctly.

I don`t think that it was necessary for me to have my head bit off for trying to help and explain the forum rules before the self repair conversation went any further.

 

Did you skim through my OP? Because you clearly must not have read my entire post. I realize I did not get the latest system update from GTA V, because the game is ONE YEAR OLD. As I said, the console is updated up to GTA V. I believe I am now missing 2
or 3 system updates rather than the 17, (sarcasm), I needed when I first turned it on after I got it working.

As for the console not being fixed properly. Do you know what the three red rings means? Commonly known as the 'red ring of death'? It's when the console doesn't turn on, (The GPU/CPU loses contact with the board because Microsoft used awful solder). The
console now, after I fixed it, TURNS ON.

Now all problems aside, thinking constructively, I don't see a way to get the latest system update (the one that came out last week, or 2 weeks ago), without buying a game that released this past week. That game should have the latest system update on it,
as per the link in my second post. I have already tried downloading the update from Xbox.com and burning it to a blank CD-R (as stated in my OP), however that did not work. DO YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS, other than what I have already tried?

What i meant was you can`t get THE system update from a game disc, yes it sounded wrong how i typed it.

Seeing as you seem to be a know it all, why are you even asking us mere mortals for any help????

 

Go to Dashboard > Settings > System > Console Settings > System Info

Look on the right, and read Dashboard version. Post what it says here.

When you said in your OP, "... and now when I connect to LIVE it won't let me update to the LATEST version..." What does that mean? Won't let me? Does that mean you're getting a onscreen prompt, if so what does that say?

Is it one this?

• Can't download the update. To test your connection, open System Settings and select Network Settings, Test Xbox Live Connection.
  

Was it an error code comprised of six groups of four digits? Or no prompt or error at all? Does the system update prompt appear but not go through when you initiate it?

Because... if you can connect to Live you have the latest system update.

If your console is connected to Xbox Live, you have the latest console software. When you connect to Xbox Live, you are automatically prompted to update your software if an update is available.

Uhhh...i have a more basic question: how did u repair it yourself?

 

I thought downloading updates to disk was a thing..... I maybe wrong.

Use google/bing for self repair help..... just don't expect help here.

The best advice is too seek a local repair shop for second hand consoles IMO........

Understand OP that if you have or are going to seek repair from ANYONE OTHER THAN MS (in other words making a repair order and sending it in) if you connect to the network again you will eventually get a console ban. This is includes any urge to open the
console your self.
