system update killed my hard drive

Hello. The events of the past few days have convinced me to leave the Xbox family, which I have been a part of since the original Xbox. This forum post is an opportunity for you to retain my business, and I hope you do. I have already spoken to tech support
(a number of hours spent with about 5 different reps already, including Clark who was very sympathetic and helpful), and they suggested that I post to the forums because they couldn't help me anymore, nor could they allow me to speak with a supervisor. One
rep told me that I would receive a phone call, which never happened.

The recent system update, and ensuing advice from Xbox tech support has caused me to lose a $100+ large capacity hard drive, and 11 years of saved game data. The last tech that I spoke to boiled the problem down to "compatibility issues with my hard drive."
This is after I had been instructed to reformat my hard drive to wipe all of my data by previous reps. The case # is
[Mod Removed].

Basically, I was FORCED to apply a system update, which produced an erroneous "not enough space on your hard drive" error message, and left my hard drive in an "unformatted" state. Troubleshooting, which, again, included completely reformatting my hard drive
(which I resisted but resigned to do after being told I had no choice). Getting HD working again only forced me into the same loop, having to run the system update, and killing my hard drive.

I want to be very clear here... #1 my hard drive worked 100% fine for over a year, until the system update. #2 you are going to review the long history of my request, and discover the my hard was not Microsoft branded, and attempt to dismiss me, and my request.
#3 I would have happily purchased a MS hard drive if you actually made one that was 320GB, but you don't... not to mention the fact that it's very difficult to find ANY decent-sized hard drives for the "original" model. #4 While your help techs were cordial,
their varying levels of training caused me to reformat my hard drive before any attempt was made to recover the data. #5 I will need to buy a replacement hard drive ASAP, to begin re-download all the games I've bought online, and so I don't miss out on recent
Xbox Gold deals. #6 If you there are known problems with other branded hard drives, why even allow them on the market?! I feel like I did nothing wrong here, but it's being painted that way.

These are just games, and I'm just one customer, but when you spent 2 months playing Borderlands 2 with your GF, only to see all of your progress blown away for seemingly no good reason... or you lose all of your character progress in games like Assassin's
Creed, Halo and Rainbow 6 that you built up over years of playing... or you're out $100 on a hard drive... you can understand why I'm... unhappy. I am very serious about leaving Xbox never to return, and taking friends and family with me, unless you can do
something to change my mind, and soon.

I look forward to reply and assistance! Thank you for your time.

:)

Update killed my system?
I say the update killed my system because it isnt the first time something broke right after an update
Believe whatever you want. It won't make it true. I have Xenon, Zephyr, Falcon, Jasper, Trinity, and Corona generation
consoles. None have failed due to a system update.

All Xenon and Zephyr consoles are faulty. All will fail before their time.

Update killed my system?

Three red rings indicates that your power supply has a problem, you can try fixing that by unplugging it from the wall, and the xbox itself, and plugging it back in. Make sure all the plugs are in properly. I've had an experience similar to yours and that
seemed to fix the problem, But wether the update killed your xbox? I think not. Updates shouldn't cause hardware problems at all. Maybe while you were updating the power supply came loose and caused problems. Try unplugging and see if that fixes your red rings
and shutting off problems.

This is what can happen when you take the risk of using unauthorized 3rd party hardware. How is Microsoft responsible for compatibility and reliability issues with products it didn't make nor license? You took the risk and lost. You should have backed
up your saves and perhaps used the cloud storage for them. There is nobody here that can help with an unofficial 3rd party product. Sorry

Homegrown, I appreciate your complete lack of empathy, you are very helpful ;-).

Please take note that my question in this forum is directed to Xbox, the company, not users like yourself. I am simply following the direction I was given by their phone support techs.

6. Please take note that this is the public forum where most questions are answered by volunteer ambassadors such as myself and usually not by anyone within the company. If your hard drive has failed, contact the manufacturer. Empathy won't change the facts
that I have stated. I did add a sorry though.

That is not what the tech support person told me. You are suggesting that they purposefully mislead me here.

PS: Do a search for high capacity, Microsoft brand hard drives. they don't even make them anymore, yet I'm a fool for not owning one.

system update killed my hard drive

I'm having the same issue on my xbox 360 I have the classic 360 but I have gone through 4 xboxes in 6 years. Everytime one pooped out I had another to replace it. However my current HDD wasn't even two years old from the time I started to use it. I had 63
gigs left open on my HDD & another 19 gigs on my USB. After tonight's update. June 7 2014. It completely took my HDD offline. Mind you I Recieved two updates one after the wipe. My account checks out fine. I have checked various other forums to find out I'm
not the only one. Most of the people affected have older model 360s and most of which had 100+ gigs free. All my peripherals & equipment are Microsoft brand from Gamestop, NEX, & Best Buy bought.

So stop trolling on this guy!!! Seriously if this turns out to be a marketing thing to make people switch to Xbox one there could be a class action lawsuit.

& one little last thing I also have two current xbox360s my newest one with the wifi built in had no problem after update. And that HDD on that system is full to the max with mostly video content downloaded for my kids. Why only the older system with a larger
free HDD but with a good condition HDD that gets it's system cache cleared & HDD formatted from time to time.

Lucky thing is I have my data backed up. But I'm angry because my HDD is not recognized by the 360

Honestly I have one friend who is a xbox live ambassador him self. I will message him a little later. But for now I'm waiting for Xbox live services to open their call center.

Seriously if I were to attach one of my older xbox360 HDD & I were to get this same update. If it was working fine before but it poops out after the update in going to make 3 videos of me attaching each drive & if they each fail after update I'm pretty sure
it might make doe headlines on YouTube

10. I'm just stating the facts. Microsoft is not responsible for what happens to unauthorized 3rd party hardware. It is against the TOS (that you agreed to when signing up for Xbox Live) to even use them. Good luck. Bye.

My Hard Drive is not 3rd party Hardware. It came with my factory made xbox360.

Also a nice gentleman at the windows store did in fact help me out. Turns out it was the firmware. His console went through the same thing last night. He advised me to purchase a USB transfer cable & format my old drive on my other xbox. Then while updating
the current old problem xbox remove the drive. Reattach after the update goes through. And it worked.

The drive produced by Microsoft was made In Thailand.

I know they are not responsible for the hardware, but they were the ones who pushed the wrong firmware. They just forced hundreds of loyal customers to abandon their xboxes because of this patch. A warning should be issued to all players about this.

BLUE4639 - I wasn't talking to you. I was responding to Smac Live. This is why you should start a thread of your own. The problems that the OP are having is related to his 3rd party hardware.
