If your son doesn't have the epic account setup already then create the account and then link the new gamertag to it and then try linking his fortnite.

yes, they each have epic accounts, they are signed into their epic accounts on PS4 and on Switch, sometimes on my computer. They can play cross platform on each of those with their epic accounts. Just not on Xbox One.

once an xbox account is linked with an epic games account it is locked to it, you can un associate it but you would only be able to link that same live account to the same epic account, they changed it al early this year to stop switching.

epic changed it all last year, you can only link one xbox account to an epic account, you can unlink it but you can only relink that same xbox account to that same epic account. I think they did this as people were switching and changing and losing in game content they had bought.
