Surround sound / Xbox One S, error 0x80bd0009 Check your audio receiver

I'm having the issue outlined here.

Basically, I can't get the existing surround sound to work with my Xbox One S, with the alert referenced in the subject to this post, when selecting anything other than uncompressed stereo for audio. It all comes out as 5 channel stereo, as confirmed via
a test tone DVD I was able to toss in the One S.

At this point, I would be fine just going over optical for audio, directly into my surround sound, but I get no audio over optical, regardless the setting. However, the One S DOES let me toggle between the available options for optical, suggesting that the
connection is at least recognized by both devices.

I've tried changing HDMI from auto to manual in One S settings as others have suggested, but the One S doesn't recognize the TV as supporting 4K when I do, and it still doesn't fix the issue.

All other devices work without issue (confirmed surround sound via Blu-Ray disc on the Samsung unit, and confirmed surround sound on  TV via Surround Speaker Check app)

Also, since I just purchased the One S, Amazon did a full retail swap (no refurb unit), and the issue persists with the new hardware. I've also tested using known good HDMI cables (the one from the  TV) using known good HDMI ports on the TV (the one from
the  TV), and the issue persists.

All devices are up to date, and all can connect to the internet without issue.

And yes, the TV is set to Bitstream, not PCM.

    Any help would be welcomed.

    --Cast of characters:

    -TV: Vizio D50u-D1

-Surround sound: Samsung HT-H4500 (speakers plus blu-ray setup), directly connected to TV via HDMI (ARC)

-Xbox One S directly connected to TV via HDMI and directly connected to surround sound via optical audio (yes, this is a "belt and suspenders" setup for now, but I just want one of the two options to work)

    --Supporting cast:

- TV 4th gen (new one with App Store) directly connected to TV via HDMI

-Nintendo Wii directly connected to TV via component cables (5 channel stereo as expected, due to Wii hardware limitations)

    :)

    Hi,
Thanks for the reply. In Display & sound,Digital audio, hdmi audio, hdmi auto is set to stereo uncompressed.when I try and change it to 5.1uncompressed or DTS digital surround i keep getting this message -"check you audio receiver- There wasa problem using this setting, make sure your audio receiver supports it, Also makes sure to choose at least one setting. Both cannot be off. (0X80bd0009)

In display & sound tv connection hdmi is set to auto detect-is that right?

Cannot Set HDMI Audio to 5.1 or 7.1, Error 0x80bd0009

I was originally only getting L/R channels. (No rear at all). I have the "beta" selection checked under TV/ troubleshooting, selected HDMI (without auto detect) for my sound, and my digital audio boxes say 7.1 uncompressed for HDMI and DTS for optical.
Changed my surround sound receiver to Deselect HDMI out. With that I have fully functional surround sound for games (center channel included), where as before I was getting the 0x80bd0009 error. Tested it by standing next to a waterfall in CoD and turning
around. I believe the "unsupported" stuff only applies to TV signals. That's all I got.

    Yes, the 0x80bd0009 error Code was displayed after a update but there was a Workaround: "Press Menu Button, Settings, Display & Sound, ensure HDTV is "select," not "auto." This relaunched the display in 480p, which you easily could change back to 1080p;
but the key is that this reset also audio output options. You could now select HDMI audio for 5.1 and DTS and ..., which you couldn't before."

    Did you tried this workaround?

You can also check instead of a second HDMI cable an audio cable!!!!

    1. Leave the HDMI cable connected to your TV for video.
    2. Connect one end of the digital audio cable to the S/PDIF (optical audio) port on the console.
    3. Connect the other end of the digital audio cable to the digital audio input port on your Receiver.

try to update the controller it is seperate from a system update and make sure you check your audio settings, maybe try this https://windowsreport.com/xbox-error-0x80bd0009-dolby-atmos/ or https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/xbox/forum/all/xbox-1-error-code-0x80bd0009/2a90e68d-6901-45b6-9da4-d56f0b49d7de
