Surround sound bitstream 5.1 problems Xbox One

    Hello,

So I've been browsing the people's surround sound topics here, and most of the time people don't have proper surround all the time due to settings.

Well, I'm hooked to a 5.1 surround system through an optical cable. Thing is, my cable box does stereo with most channels, which is only the 2 front speakers (Which I don't mind). This signal is very smooth, no issues.

Netflix, games, etc. the Dolby/DTS through bitstream (my amp does both, so no issue here), works most of the time. 4 of the background speakers work perfectly, only the front speaker, which handles all the talking, sometimes doesn't work. I've noticed that
this problem is solved when I reboot the Xbox One.

Anyone with the same problem, or how to fix this? I've tried all troubleshootings and posts that somewhat have the same issue, but none is exactly the same problem and none worked either

    Thanks!

    :)

    Surround sound issue

Ok I have a 5.1 surround sound system with a receiver/dvd player combo and that's connected with a audio optical cable directly to the Xbox one and hdmi to the tv settings on xbox are optical out, bitstream, dolby digital and for games and blue ray 5.1 surround
works perfect but for hulu and music and dvds even certified for 5.1 surround only come in on my front two speakers and the woofer (2.1 stereo sound) shouldn't my xbox be smart enough to mix the sound to all speakers if it's coming through as stereo sound?

    Help with surround sound please

The HDMI standard does support surround sound ...
    en.m.wikipedia.org/.../HDMI

I would check HDMI output setting on the xbox, there are 4 settings ... Stereo uncompressed, 5.1 uncompressed, 7.1 uncompressed, and Bitstream out. Try the x.1 settings and Bitstream setting to see if the receiver recognizes surround sound. If not, you will
likely need to use an optical cable to connect the Xbox to the receiver.

I'm having a similar issue but I am using headphones connected through an Astro mix amp. Bitstream out and voices, other sounds are extremely muted or non existent. This just started yesterday.

I had an issue too but I attributed it to the fact that my audio receiver system is 15 years old. I had to get an optical to analog converter box, and now it works fine.

Mine is a couple of years old, but it can handle Dolby and DTS, it even puts on a dedicated dolby light when it's detecting such a signal. And it works fine most of the time, but sometimes the front speakers stop working. When I reboot, they start working
again and the dolby sound is sublime.

Xbox Series X November Update broken sound.

Lots of info there, not sure if its all problems now or how it was before but ill try and help.

*The bitstream option has disappeared from the audio options. I can see Stereo Uncompressed, Dolby Digital and DTS Surround.*

Dolby Digital and DTS surround are bitstream formats, so the bitstream option is still there.

*Leaving the sound as Stereo on the Xbox. I start Netflix and when I choose a movie the only option is English. English 5.1 is no longer available.*

Have you enabled 'pass app audio directly to your receiver'? its in 'additional options and disabled by default.

*When the sound is now set to DTS on the Xbox. I start Netflix and the movies gives me the same English and English 5.1 choices. but.. the amplifier displays DTS Surround Sound irrespective of choosing English or English 5.1. The English 5.1 is being converted from Dolby Digital to DTS by the Xbox!*

Yeah, you've told the Xbox to output DTS as its bitstream output, so thats what its doing, as i understand it the default ' English 5.1', would be Dolby digital 5.1 but you've asked the system to output DTS as the bitstream format so its converting it.

*When the sound is set to Dolby Digital on the Xbox. I start Netflix and the movies now give me English and English 5.1. But... the amplifies remains on Dolby Digital irrespective of choosing English or English 5.1.*

Because the system is being told to output 5.1, so that's the default output its using. try enabling 'pass app audio directly to your receiver'.

On mine setup, I've just left bitstream output as Dolby Digital ( which is a bitstream format) and all works good, i cant us DTS as my LG tv wont passthrough DTS via optical to my receiver.

    XB1 Surround Sound Issue

That's simply incorrect. The Xbox One has output surround sound since its release-- DTS and 5.1/7.1 uncompressed multichannel PCM over HDMI. Until the last update, it did not support outputting a compressed Dolby Digital bitstream, which is what is needed
for optical (because optical can't carry uncompressed 5.1/7.1). It does now, however.

OP, it sounds like you are selecting 5.1/7.1 uncompressed, which is not supported by TVs (that is for a receiver (AVR))--and that is why you can't select it when HDMI is set to Auto. Most likely your TV is just seeing it as 2.0 (stereo) audio. You need
to set the Xbox One audio to bitstream with Dolby Digital encoding. Even then, please be aware that very few TVs pass DD 5.1 from an HDMI source out though the optical out. What you may end up getting is virtual surround sound, not true discrete 5.1.
