Surround headset question: manufacturer claims chat audio via USB?

Hi folks! So, I'm looking into the Turtle Beach Stealth 500X and 800X, as they can handle DTS and are specifically listed as being designed for Xbox One use. But here's what confuses me: when I look at the specs and technical details, it says the wireless
transmitter hooks up via optical cable for game audio and via USB for CHAT audio. I was under the impression that USB connections for audio would not work on X1, because it doesn't have the necessary drivers or codecs for audio over USB. Does this only apply
to game audio, or has something changed to allow this kind of hookup? Or, should this be a red flag?

Details at the following link, under the drop down at the very bottom, detailing the wireless transmitter.

    Elite 800X Headset

Thanks in advance for any insight!

    :)

    Headset/chat question that needs answering

I have a Tritton AX 720 headset that I use for my Xbox One (plugged into the rear optical audio port). However, to receive chat audio that will allow me to talk too, it needs to be plugged into the controller via a cable.

My question is: if I get the Xbox One stereo headset adapter and connect the headset to it, will I still be able to get game audio via the optical cable? Or will it be forced into stereo mode because it's plugged into the adapter?

    Thanks in advance.

Xbox One Stereo Headset by Microsoft - Info needed

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but i've been looking at these since my normal headset cable has broke. I like the idea that the headset plugs into the adapter, no more fiddly cable built in. my main question is how well does it cancel outside noise? only ask as i already have surround sound, and would rather just carry on like that with the audio, rather then the audio via the headset. Just mainly want it as a chat headset.

Surround headset question: manufacturer claims chat audio via USB?

    Hey James!

They definitely work on the Xbox One. I'm slightly confused too, but I'm wondering if the optical connection is for all audio and the USB is for power and connecting the transmitter to the console (so the console knows they're there). I couldn't find the
text you mentioned about optical for game audio and USB for chat audio, but maybe the USB audio is for PC/Mac or something without optical connections.

I know they definitely work. A friend of mine reviewed the 500X (and 800X should be the same), specifically for the Xbox One:

    www.icxm.net/.../Hardware-review-stealth500x.html

If you have any more questions about those headsets, maybe tweet the author of that review (@HooksaN) and let him know it was me who pointed you to him. He tried them out so he'll definitely know more and he's usually fairly good at replying on Twitter.

    Hope this helped.

Thanks guys - big help to hear from folks with experience with these! Kind of makes me wonder how Turtle Beach can advertise these headphones being "For Xbox One," and being "DTS gaming headphones" when you have to use the same old codec that we use on other
less expensive headphones. I'd be pretty disappointed if I got them based on what the website says only to open the user's manual and see I can't use DTS, when that's certainly what the product page would have us believe. I may as well just stick with my Trittons.

The Chat-over-USB thing must be referring to PC like you said. If you scroll all the way to the bottom of the page for the 800x it says in two spots in the grey area with the yellow text:

    1. Click "System Requirements" under Specifications and it says "Console Chat Connection: USB."

    2. Click "Transmitter" and it says "Game Input: Digital Optical" and "Chat/Mic Input/Output: USB."

    Bizarre, huh?

I've got a few more answers....

I owned the Stealth 500X's briefly, but returned them due to what I felt was deceptive marketing. DTS was one sticking point. Apparently TB worked with the audio engineers at DTS to develop some kind of proprietary sound processing technology
inside the headset. However, what we all know as DTS audio out of the console supports a limited number of channels (I want to say 5.1). Dolby Digital supports more discrete channels, and that's why it is required to output Dolby from your console
    to the transmitter.

My second sticking point was a claim that you can hook up your phone to the stealth 500X to receive notifications of calls and texts. What they didn't tell you is that this requires a physical cable connection, making this entirely impractical. I own XP400s
and Tangos and both support Bluetooth integration--I can answer and take calls directly on my headset. I thought the Stealth 500X marketing points were referring to the same feature, but not even close.

Alright, so negatives aside, the wireless chat on the Stealth 500X was
awesome. It is completely wireless, crystal clear and had great range. I'm not even sure what is meant by USB for chat audio. The setup is like other TB wireless headsets: connect the wireless transmitter to your console using an optical cable and
power the transmitter with USB. That's really the only place USB is used in the whole system. My take was the wireless chat was perfect. It was a real shame to give that up, but the other two sticking points just killed the 500x for me.

Now, the 800x has the same not-really-DTS thing going on, but I'm over that. The 500x transmitter has a pass through, and I was able to set my One to output DTS audio and it passed through the transmitter to my home theater receiver and played fine there
as DTS. You just get no audio through the headset. But if I'm using my HT surround I don't need my headset. That just means I can have my DTS if I take a moment to visit the settings. Good enough.

The 800x also supports Bluetooth phone pairing for phone calls and Bluetooth audio streaming. I double-checked by reading the manual in advance! i am also expecting the same wireless chat perfection as the stealth 500x. All in all I'm super excited about
the 800x. In fact, searching for it is how I landed here. Thought I'd take a moment (or 10) to share my experiences and answer these same questions that I had when I decided to try the 500x.

    The actual bullet point text:

Never Miss a Text or Call

Hook up your mobile phone to hear text notifications or take calls while gaming.

Yes, I made the mistake of assuming that because this is a wireless headset that the phone connection worked the same as their other wireless headsets (i.e., the connection is wireless). Having to physically connect a cell phone by a cable to use it on
a wireless headset kind of destroys the convenience of both. In my opinion it's such a worthless "feature" that they shouldn't have bothered to include it in the list of major features.

In any case, it does not say "cable" on the product page, and I found the feature to be misleading because of my prior experience with other TB products that do not require a cable.

  10. It says the stealth 500x also includes a mobile cable I think you need to read it again and get your facts right before saying something is misleading or are you not reading from TB site?
