    Surge protector

I've been using a surge protector for a long time and someone just told me that I'm not supposed to do that. I haven't had any problems since I've been using though. What should I do?

    Surge protector

The surge protector is already built in.

Whether you have the power brick on the original Xbox One or the One S or upcoming X. The PSU also doubles as a surge protector.

    From the Xbox Support page:

The Xbox One PSU contains an internal fuse that helps protect your console from voltages that are too high and power surges.

Yeah, the 360 had a surge protector built in as well.

You don't want to be using an additional surge protector on your console.

I have like a 6 or 8 plug surge protector power board which I connect my tv laptop desktop 360 and Xbox one to. There's nothing wrong in wanting to connect a surge protector. It may no be needed but think of it as additional protection just in case one fails.
It's down to the customer not the opinions of people on this forum who say otherwise.

After a line snapped on the grid, I learned the hard way that a quality breaker style Surge Protector is worth putting on everything from consoles and TV's to the Fridge.

After the outtage, everything connected to a surge protector still worked fine while everything not connected was toast.

You should not use an additional surge protector with your console as it already has one.

You should not plug your console into a power strip/powerboard.It should be plugged directly into a wall socket.

These are not the opinions of others, these are facts that Microsoft tell you on their support pages & in the manual that comes with the console.

@Daft Badger: Unfortunately, Imma gonna have to agree with Electro on this one, as it painfully became obvious some three years ago when a freak electrical storm blew out a number of devices in our house and extensions - including a PS3 Slim, Xbox 360 Slim,
A/V receiver, a long-serving Sony WEGA CRT monitor and... well, you get the picture. All of these devices were connected to the wall socket, and even though the lightning hit a sole TV antenna, it nevertheless created a ripple effect throughout the house.

It took months to claim the insurance, and I thank my lucky stars I had a back-up PS3 and 360 - but they were the *last* of their kind (both pure white) and once these two dino's are gone, there's no replacements! So, as a matter of precaution, we've installed
surge protectors wherever there's a power socket, and I don't really care whether you should or shouldn't... it simply brings peace of mind. Heck, it was only a few months ago that I was playing Xbox One in the dead of night and there was a sudden, inexplicable
outage - only lasted about ten seconds - but miraculously, once the power kicked back in, my Xbox was still operational and the game I was playing hadn't even crashed!

As an additional precaution: come storm season, I won't even think twice to SHUT DOWN the power and pull the plug/powerboard from the socket when not actually using the consoles. Once bitten, twice shy, I should think ^^

I'm just repeating what Microsoft tell you not to do.

If people want to use another surge protector or plug their consoles into a power strip & risk damaging it then that's up to them.

  12. Why would MS recommend NOT using an inline surge protector?

One person says consoles have a buillt in surge protector, which is great that it does. However, it's NOT resetable. No it blows out forcing tou to either buy an external power brick (Xbox One) or send the entire console (X1-S and even the X1-X) either in
for repair or purchase another console.

So why not recommended not using an inline surge protector. -

    Surge protector

Daisy chaining surge protectors like that is never a good idea. It's not "extra protection", you're only setting yourself up for bigger potential problems. MS isn't just making things up, it's how surge protection works. There's a good thread with other
people discussing this below and throughout the internet.

  14. Hey all,

Figured I'd jump in here and help to set the record straight. All Xbox One consoles have built in surge protectors and it's not recommended to use additional protectors as this can restrict the voltage to the console and prevent the system from reaching
peak performance. To reset the power supply in the event of a surge, you'll only need to unplug the power supply from the console and wall outlet for about 10-15 seconds.

For more information and troubleshooting steps (should you ever need them) in the event of a power issue on the console. Be sure to check out the official support page

    HERE
    as well as this one
    HERE
for more details on the power supply. Surge protector :)
