When you say generic joystick you mean generic xbox controller?

Those should automatically work with a windows PC Ive used both a Xbox 360 wired and Xbox one connected with a Micro USB cable to my PC and have played both Xbox One and 360 games fine with both of them. So maybe go to your local game store and purchase
a used 360 wired controller.

According to the official Xbox adaptive controller FAQ
"Most devices with connection types 3.5mm (such as switches and buttons) and USB 2.0 (such as HID joysticks or HID gamepads) work with the Xbox Adaptive Controller."

In order to replace the joystick with a trackball you need to get an accessory with a USB 2.0 connection
