    @GG

I think you're missing my point. I understand the controls, it's the limitations put on your movement that ruining it for me.

This is a skateboarding/snowboarding game with guns, you don't have the freedom of movement most of these type of "over the top" open world games give you. The game actually punishes you for not doing "tricks" while playing.

I think they have limited their audience by going this route.

They did something different,Sunset Overdrive isn't your average open world game and cover base shooter....Remember those trailers, interviews, gameplay footages,previews,....

All they did was combine two genres and in doing so limited the appeal for many people. I watched the trailers, gameplay, etc but you don't see how much your movement is actually hindered until you play the game.

I'm not bashing the game....if your a fan of Tony Hawk, SSX you'll love it......if your fan of Crackdown, Infamous you'll notice the limitations right off the bat.

I disagree wholeheartedly with Randver. I would argue that there's MORE freedom of movement. The simple fact that you can interact with just about everything in the environment allows for that to happen. If you couldn't interact with anything, then your
modes of movement would be severely limited, which is exactly what the game portrays - it's supposed to be fast and frenetic and fun and it succeeds in that regard in spades. It takes ideas that have proved popular in the past (open-world style games, shooters,
and Tony Hawk) and throws them into a melting pot of awesome. That's not going to hinder it; it helps it.

I'm not exactly sure how you can disagree with me when you haven't played the open world games that allow for more freedom of movement. You've got probably less than 30 minutes in Crackdown which would mean minimal agility orbs, didn't even see games like
The Hulk, Spiderman on your played list and I'm betting you haven't played Infamous.

The games I'm referring to you can interact with everything, SO you can't. People's perception is going to depend on what they have played to compare it to.

SO gives you items to interact with much like a skate park does for skateboarders. Miss a rooftop jump and end up in an alley you'll need to find something to interact with to get back to the rooftops, during that process your movement slows to a crawl.
I'd prefer just to be able to run right back up that wall or jump and be on the move again (which is what most of these games do).

I can hook on to "rails' strung through the environment yet can't grab a window ledge to climb tall buildings. You go from feeling like a superhero one moment to a old woman with a walker the next depending on the environment.

We asked some of the guys in MP that were scoring extremely high how they were doing it. They had the found the best rail loops at the spawn points to optimize their score and just kept going in circles. So we'll have 8 people doing that once we all learn
the maps? That's not freedom that's the game deciding how I should play it.

  6. Thanks for the feedback, guys. I'll have to take a pass on this game. Not what I was expecting.

  7. Randver, you're talking about getting slowed because you miss a rail or something? They are EVERYWHERE! Rails, ledges, fans, cars, wires, etc. I actually find it incredibly hard to miss! As for going in circles, I prefer it because in many cases it prevents
the exact thing you're talking about hating - slowing you down. For example, if I grind into a wall, I don't just stop - it automatically turns me around and I keep going. There is no loss in momentum! That's an awesome thing if you ask me!

I agree you can go from rail to rail, car to car, etc and that's exactly what gives the game the skateboarding/snowboarding game feel that will turn a lot of people off.

Most of the rails are needlessly short simply to require you to press A and X. It's obvious they wanted that "combo" feel to movement so the game succeeds in what it intended to do but that's the games downfall for me.

I'm not bashing the game ( take that back, MP is very tacked on and could have been much better), the SP is very good character, story and humor wise but if someone is expecting the "normal" open world, over the top style gameplay they'll be disappointed.

Even the gunplay aspect is downplayed. Auto lock and AE damage weapons allow you to simply hold down your trigger and aim the general direction of the mutants while concentrating on your movement combos.

Good or bad it's a Tony Hawk, SSX game with guns and if you like that genre, you'll like the game.

  9. @Randver:

Regarding the button pressing, it's done on purpose. If I had to press only one button to go from one side of the game world to the other, the game would be no fun because it would practically be playing itself. Sure, it may seem like a combo-system, but
that's what helps keep you active as you play!

As for the auto-aim, I think it does just fine in terms of balance. It helps make it accessible for those who aren't used to shooters as well as makes it easier to shoot enemies since you're constantly on the move and is still hard enough for players who
are good at the game (such as myself) that we can still miss on occasion but not also have it be rage-inducing or take forever to take an enemy down - all of this helps promote the primary purpose of this game: FUN!

This game is not meant to be slow or challenging to the point of inducing rage - if you want either of those, then by all means, go play something else; you already know you won't find that here.

I completely agree and that was my point. It's a button masher for the sake of giving people the feeling they are doing something. You have people like me that despise that in games.

For you it's fun, for me it's carpal tunnel inducing work. I don't play fighting games for that very reason, I hate games with QTE's.

I put this game in the "ADD generation" genre. I don't want to press 10 buttons to move a 100 yards, when you're my age you'll understand ;p

Played it a little this Morning. I'm enjoying the game for the reasons Randver says he hates and I'm 37 years old. Maybe just not as quick as you used to be.

That's not a maybe, I can confirm I'm not as quick as I used to be but I got a decade on you youngster.

Even in my younger days I didn't enjoy the combo button mashers, I'm more of a turn based strategy/RTS/RPG kind of guy. Thinking man's games ;p

  15. What amazes me is that a lot of people (not necessarily you, Randver) think that this game and others like it are easy. To be able to press all of the right buttons to get the right lines is actually pretty difficult over an extended period of time. As for
other types of games you mentioned Randver, it was a QTE game that made game of the year (Telltale Games' The Walking Dead) and fighting games have an insane amount of strategy (and timing) involved.
