Sunset Overdrive, can you play offline or not?

I recently bought Sunset Overdrive on disc, NEW. I put it into my Xbox on March 11, 2016. I did the game install as well as the mandatory 3.2GB update.

When I start the game, it takes me to the main screen where it says "X, to select player."

I click X and it asks me, "Who are you?"

So, I choose my profile name, and it proceeds to prompt me to login to Xbox Live.

But I don't want to play while connected online so, I cancel and it goes back to the Who are you screen. It will not let me progress unless I sign into Xbox Live.

If I login to XBL, move forward with character creation, begin gameplay but then sign myself out, it automatically returns to the main page asking me to choose player again.

I have seen articles from 2013 stating that Sunset Overdrive has an offline single player, campaign. I've read a few forums where people ask whether this game is offline or online but to no definitive answers.

I've even tried to play with the Xbox in offline mode, (I'm connect via Ethernet). When I do, it tells me to connect to Xbox Live.

There is only one Profile on my Xbox; mine.

So, I'm asking, do I HAVE TO BE connected to Xbox Live in order to play Sunset Overdrive? Even though it is a disc based game?

Playing offline

Why am I unable to play the xbox one offline? Sunset overdrive is a game that can be played offline but keeps asking me to pick my player and wont allow me to select my profile offline. Xbox support line couldnt help. Not sure why they are even there.
Can anyone here help?

 

You do not need to be connected to Xbox Live in order to play this game. I just tried and succeeded to play the game on my own console while it was offline.

Log in to your profile from the dashboard and then boot the game, then hit A on the title screen and it should just drop you in.

I put my console in Offline Mode, signed in as me, booted the game and had no issues loading into the game as my character.

 

You need to be logged in to a profile no matter what game you play.

you don't have to be online though. Although i think you need to be online to unlock achievements.

Even if you do play sunset overdrive while connected to Live no one can join your game anyway if thats what you are worried about.

Thank you for the responses. I'm still having the same issues but I think I've found out why. I found this thread explaining issues similar to mine. I think it has to do with how my Security and Password Settings are on my Xbox. See the link below and
