    Are you pertaining to the suffix? According to Xbox Support:

    "If you’re assigned a suffix, the # symbol and suffix appear everywhere except in friends lists. You don’t see suffixes of friends in your friends list, and they don’t see yours in their friends list. Your suffix may also appear in games that support the modern gamertag system so that everybody knows who’s who."

    If it's got a suffix then the tag is in use somewhere on the servers. You would also get the suffix if you used special characters. The only way to remove a suffix is to choose another gamertag.

    They had to shorten the gamer tags when they added on the suffix. By adding the suffix, it enabled gamers to have the same gamer tag as another gamer. The suffix is just a way of distinguishing the different gamers with the same name.

    Yes if you change your gamertag to one that has a suffix that suffix will be visible in-game.
