I want to subscribe to xbox live ultimate using my microsoft balance but it tells me to add a credit card is there any way to subscribe using microsoft balance without credit card?

Hello, Xbox Live Ultimate uses reoccurring billing so it would need to be paid via a debit/credit card or paypal. If not then you can buy a scratch off card and pay that way BUT Only if you dont already have an account set up on reoccurring billing because it wont work. It will still be asked to pay via the methods explained above.

The other way is buying a gift card from a retailer, redeem it in your account and then subscribe the Xbox Live Gold using the money in your Microsoft Account balance.

Live and game pass cannot be bought with gift cards or account balances, only debit/credit cards. This is A, to insure that you have a way to keep up with the subscription and B you are old enough to subscribe.

Actually you can use your Microsoft account balance to purchase subscriptions.
