I wished I had known the issue with the Seagate. Bought a new 5tb hd for my One and was going to use my 3tb Seagate that I was using for the One to now use for the 360. Thanks for the heads up.

People have only been having problems with Seagate.

    Western Digital drives work fine.

Mines a western digital. It's a WD elements 1TB USB 3.0 portable hard drive for Windows. There is a 2TB model available as well.

And yes you can transfer your digital games to the drive.

The 360 has an option to format the drive to FAT32 for you. You don't need to do this on PC.

So just plug it in. If the drive is already FAT32 then it's ready to use. If it isn't then there is a format option.

So I purchased a 1 TB Toshiba drive. System formatted it and recognized it just fine. I went to re-download the F1 game today, but it will only let me download it to the internal hard drive. So when downloading free/purchased games, do you first have
to download them to the internal drive (or a 32 GB flash drive) and then move it to the external hard drive? And then once you've done that, can you play the games directly off the external hard drive?

Unfortunately this seems to be the case.

You have to download it to the internal drive first then move to the external drive.

Although you can change the destination from within the download queue but this will start the download again from the beginning and leave a partial download on the internal drive(which you can delete)

And yes you can play the games directly from the external drive.

If someone has figured a way to get downloads to install directly to the external HDD then I would like to know too.

How do you change the destination within the download queue?

    Thanks for the answer, Malacath!

Just checked. You can only change the destination if the download is pending.

So you need at least 2 items in the download queue.

Select the second item then select change storage then select download now.

The first file will now be 2nd in queue so you can now change storage on that.

There is no easy way though. Just got to hope a future update gives you the option to select storage before all downloads or lets you set a default.

I posted a question on another thread re: how to make the external HDD the "system drive" & I was told that you CAN do it by following these steps (I have not verified this yet)

    1. Have console connected to Xbox Live to update online gamertag profile. (May need to play and save game to update online gamertag profile or add any recent achievements)

    2. Carefully transfer all save data to 2TB external drive.

    3. Follow support link
    support.xbox.com/.../add-remove-hard-drive
    to remove Internal HDD

    4. Turn on console with external 2TB HDD connected, and without being logged into Xbox Live; Press Guide Button on controller, and download your gamertag profile to external HDD. (Make sure your gamertag profile is working online, by checking to see if save
data can be used on external HDD for games, as new System File should be created to external HDD)

    5. Follow step 3 to install Internal HDD, and restart console with external HDD connected.

    6. Follow support link
    support.xbox.com/.../storage
to format Internal HDD (You will need access to back of console for console serial number) Note: If, System File or Gamertag Profile is created to Internal HDD, after format; Just delete them, after you confirm that they are
safely stored to External HDD etc.

Just found this re: External HDD Storage:

You can still install arcade games, Games on Demand, and DLC (later than 2008) on the external and use it just fine. But it is still considered external storage and has limits on use, so does not replace the internal hard drive.

Games that say they require a hard drive will still require an internal hard drive to install, the external drive does not replace this requirement.

Xbox Originals (both digital and original Xbox discs), will also still require an official Microsoft internal hard drive to work, as those have the emulation partition necessary to run those supported games. Any external drive (or 4GB internal flash storage)
will not have that partition or emulation software to run original Xbox games (i.e. Backwards Compatibility).

Some older games released before any external storage was introduced on the 360 will only read DLC if it is installed on the internal hard drive. This is because when the software was written there was no external storage so as far as the game knows, external
storage does not exists. I believe this was around 2008, and I know Fallout 3 is one game that to which this applies.

Those are the only exceptions, everything else works fine using external storage. Like I said, Games on Demand (which includes the Games with Gold offerings), Live Arcade games, and most DLC can be stored and used from there. Also you can store your movies
and music there as well, and use them with no issues.

  14. If anyone is still having problems with their external HD, especially if they are using a Seagate external like I am, I got it fixed with help from Xbox support believe it or not. The external HD has to be formatted to FAT32 first and don't plug the external
HD into the 360 until the very end of the below steps.

    1) Windows 7 formatter doesn't do FAT32. I used this and it worked like a charm:

    www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm

2)Then I followed solution #4 at this link given to me by the support agent:
    support.xbox.com/.../troubleshoot-xbox-video-on-360

Solution 4 allows you to remove & reinstall the latest update to your 360. Do what it says in this link. Select yes at the prompt on the 360 once you've started the process. When the console restarts, it will ask you if you want to install the latest update.
Select yes and let it do its thing. Basically you're just removing and re-installing the latest console update.

3)After this is complete, it should restart and take you back to the sign-in screen on the 360. Sign-in to your gamertag. Once you're on the dashboard then plug in your hard drive into the 360. If all this was done right, your external HD will be listed
    under storage in settings.

I have a 1tb Seagate backup plus portable drive. Space and it has been used to back up all my movies on Xbox live. The Drive has copied all of the movies I have purchased but when I go to playback there is a buffering problem. The skipping/lagging is
intermittent and random with no order and erratic. This skipping happens throughout the entire movie. I have not tried it on all my movies but the three I have played since I moved the movies over have had this problem with playback. Is there anything that
I can do to solve this problem?
